Abstract
A system for processing hot flue gas to remove both gaseous contaminants such as sulfur dioxide and particulate matter such as flyash integrates spray scrubbing apparatus and wet electrostatic precipitation apparatus and provides for the advantageous extraction and utilization of heat present in the flue gas. The integrated system utilizes a spray scrubbing tower and a wet electrostatic precipitator which includes a portion constructed as a cross flow heat exchanger with flue gas saturated with water vapor moving vertically upwards inside tubes arranged in a staggered pattern and ambient air being pulled horizontally across the outside of those tubes to cool the tube walls and thereby remove heat from the flue gas and cause condensation of water vapor on the inside wall surfaces. The condensate washes the electrostatically collected flyash particles down from the inside tube walls. The heat that is extracted from the saturated flue gas may be utilized for flue gas reheat after the wet electrostatic precipitator or for preheating of combustion air to the steam generator boiler.

Air cleaning apparatus and method for cleaning air

TL;DR: In this article, an air cleaning apparatus is described which, in one embodiment, has: an inlet for ambient air; an outlet for purified air; a mechanism for the uptake of a scrubbing liquor and for the removal of impurities dissolved or dispersed in the ambient air by contact with said scrubbing liquid; a blower for drawing ambient air into the apparatus, flowing the air through the apparatus and discharging the purified air from the apparatus.

Method for removing mercury from a gas stream and apparatus for same

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for removing mercury from a gas stream is described, in which sorbent is injected into the gas stream to create a cooled gas stream and the cooled stream is allowed to dwell with the sorbent in a chamber to remove mercury from the cooling gas stream.

Flue gas conditioning system

TL;DR: Improved apparatus and methods for the treatment of boiler flue gas with sulfur trioxide conditioning agent include the beneficial use of catalytic converters that can be located immediately adjacent the injection site for their sulfur dioxide output, that can also be individually controlled and can provide substantially improved conversion efficiency and that can provide an efficient, flexible, effective and relatively inexpensive multi-boiler flue conditioning system as discussed by the authors.

High velocity spray scrubber

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a method for removing entrained liquor droplets and dust particles from the rapidly upwardly moving scrubber flue gas. But this method requires a spray tower to be widened above the scrubber space.

Electrical-precipitation apparatus

TL;DR: In this article, a cyclone dust separator is used to secure uniformity of flow through the remaining chambers when one of the chambers is closed for cleaning, in an electrostatic precipitator including at least three precipitation chambers through which the gas flows in parallel.
