TLDR
In this article, the thermal performance of multilayer insulation (MLI) consisting of double aluminized Mylar radiation shields and nylon net thermal spacers was evaluated using a double guarded cylindrical calorimeter and a tank-calorimeter over the temperature range 300-77 K. The degradation in effective thermal conductivity of MLI was evaluated to be 1.68 using the calorimeters.

Thermal Performance of Multilayer Insulation Applied to Small Cryogenic Tankage

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared a number of tank calorimeter results with values based on flat-plate data and showed that the effective insulation conductivity observed for most tank wraps is greater than the measured flatplate value due to effects of corner compression, degradation at penetrations and application technique.

Effects of Compressive Loads on the Heat Flux Through Multilayer Insulations

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of compression on the heat flux of 15 multilayer insulations was investigated and the results showed that the increase in heat flux after a compressive load of 2 psi has been reached is of comparable magnitude for all insulations tested.
