Current work on fibre composite materials required the measurement of surface strains on glass reinforced plastics (GRP) products subjected to static loading. A study undertaken to account for anomalous results obtained with electrical resistance strain gauges showed that strains measured at a given load, increased with decreasing gauge length and foil gauge resistance. Measurement of localised strains using gauges of length up to 25 mm are subject to considerable discrepancy when compared with gauge lengths of less than 13 mm.read more

Measurement of thermal expansion coefficients of composites using strain gages
TL;DR: In this paper, the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) of composite materials using electrical resistance strain gages are derived, accounting for the effects of transverse sensitivity and possible misalignment of the gages.

Advances in Strain Gauge Measurement on Composite Materials
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors give an overview on the application of strain gauge techniques to the analysis of the strains in composite materials. And they consider the typical topics of the strain gauge technology applied to composites with particular reference to the compensation of thermal output, the measurement of the coefficients of thermal expansion, the determination of strain and stress state, the influence of the misalignment error, the reinforcement effect, determination of the stress intensification factor, analysis of residual stresses by the hole drilling method and the effect of transverse sensitivity on the measurements of strains along the fibres.
