The Spirit as the Lord and the Giver of Life: Recovering Relational Pneumatology and Its Significance for Being Church in Postcolonial Nigeria

This thesis analyzes non-institutional forms of religion in Southern Ontario with depth and description, via interviews of a specific local population sample (n = 10), and provides interpretation of these phenomena within a practical theological perspective (via typology). This analysis shows measurable potential for the development of a form of personal theological autonomy that is prevalent in this sample of individuals. The aspirations of the participants have suggested two possible types emerging from this sample of spiritual adherents: 1) the “inclusive seeker” and 2) the “spiritual-political activist”. This sociological account of the so-called “spiritual but not religious” (SBNR; and in some but not all cases, “nones”) also informs practical theological reflection on ‘post Judeo-Christian esoteric spirituality.’ Suggestions are finally given that point towards a post-secular – though entirely pneumatological – theology which accounts for the autonomy of the individual outside of the institutional ecclesia.

Spirituality and Autonomous Religion in Southern Ontario: A Sociological and Theological Study

CREATOR SPIRIT, SPIRIT OF GRACE: TRINITARIAN DIMENSIONS OF A CHARITOLOGICAL PNEUMATOLOGY Wesley Scott Biddy, B.A, M.A., Th.M. Marquette University, 2016 This dissertation takes up the question of the link between the creative and the redemptive work of the Holy Spirit. It presents creation as ordered to redemption and redemption as the completion of creation, especially for human beings. On the understanding of the relationship between the two orders of the Spirit’s activity proposed here, creation is of a piece with redemption and is therefore an operation of grace just as the latter is. I ground my depiction of the Spirit’s role in both aspects of the divine economy in an account of her role within the immanent Trinity. Indeed, this dissertation focuses primarily on the nature of the Spirit’s eternal relation to the other two persons of the Godhead, which is the foundation of her work in the world. It offers a conception of her intra-trinitarian role that can reconcile some apparently incompatible ideas suggested by the New Testament concerning the relationships between the divine persons, that accords with the principles that have regulated trinitarian theology throughout the history of the universal church, and that attempts to do justice to the concerns underlying different and long-controverted trinitarian models authoritatively supported by separated church traditions. Yet my account also challenges traditional views. Most fundamentally, I submit that the principle of the equality and inseparability of the persons in God calls for understanding the Holy Spirit as having a more active part in the eternal constitution of the Trinity than she has usually been ascribed. In dialogue with Thomas Weinandy and David Coffey, among others, I characterize her as mediating the exchange of love between the Father and the Son in a way that illuminates why she is essential to making them the particular persons they are. I then argue that her work in creating and redeeming humanity stems from this intra-trinitarian activity, drawing on the thought of Gerard Manley Hopkins to illustrate how grace as a theological concept can clarify the link between creation and redemption.

Creator Spirit, Spirit of Grace: Trinitarian Dimensions of a Charitological Pneumatology

This thesis works toward a constructive Pentecostal theology of the Spirit in the Former Prophets. Chapter one provides a history of interpretation (from 1896 to present) of major works engaging the Former Prophets with regard to the Spirit. Chapter two offers a Pentecostal hermeneutic of the Former Prophets. Chapter three provides a history of effects (or Wirkungsgeschichte) approach by hearing the Spirit texts of the Former Prophets alongside of early North American Pentecostals (specifically the journals from 1906-1920) in order to offer a better orientation to how Pentecostal communities have interpreted these texts in their formative years. Chapters four through seven apply the hermeneutic of chapter two to the groupings of texts of the Spirit in the Former Prophets. As such, the chapters that follow are larger literary units which include multiple references to the Spirit of Yahweh/God, but are grouped together as narratological units. Chapter four addresses the judges who explicitly experience the liberating Spirit of Yahweh. Chapter five addresses Saul and David’s musical and prophetic experiences of the Spirit of Yahweh/God both for good and ill. Chapter six addresses the ambiguities of the Spirit in the context of the prophet Micaiah. Chapter seven addresses the passing of the Spirit of true prophetic sonship from Elijah to Elisha. Chapter eight then attempts a constructive Pentecostal theology of the Spirit in light of the study of the Spirit in the Former Prophets laid out in the preceding exegetical chapters and the Wirkungsgeschichte of chapter three. Finally, the concluding chapter briefly summarizes the contributions of this study and entertains multiple potential directions for future study brought to light through this study.

Die Weise, in der man mit der Rezeption koniglicher Messiastraditionen im NT zu rechnen pflegt, bringt grose methodische Schwierigkeiten mit sich. Von der alten Konzeption der ‘Spiritualisierung’ nationaler Erwartungen (Baur, Wernle etc.) hat man prinzipiell noch immer nicht abrucken konnen: Das Mas, in dem nationale Eschatologie christianisiert worden sein soll, entzieht sich historischer und soziologischer Erklarbarkeit. F. Hahn kann die Verwendung des judischen Messiastitels nur auf dem Umweg uber sein Schema erklaren, nach dem derartige Titel zunachst auf den Wiederkommenden bezogen worden seien: ‘Der judische Messiastitel war fur Jesus und die Urgemeinde als solcher nicht tragbar’–das sei nur nach einem langeren Prozes der Christianisierung moglich gewesen, in dem der Messiasbegriff besonders mit dem Leidensgedanken verbunden worden sei; Ursprung der erst nach der alteren Zeit einsetzenden Entwicklung sei die Spottinschrift am Kreuz gewesen.–Zu den Einwanden, die Ph. Vielhauer gegen diese Konzeption vorgebracht hat, ist hinzuzufugen, das die These von der Hinrichtung Jesu als eines Messiaspratendenten (Kreuzesinschrift) angesichts des Befundes bei Mk ein Zirkelschlus ist. Denn woher weis man, wie der Titel ‘Konig der Juden’ zu verstehen ist–und in welchem Zusammenhang steht dieser Titel mit den sonst bei Mk. berichteten Auftreten Jesu? Uberdies ersetzt das von F. Hahn konstruierte Schema der allmahlichen Ubertragung der Titel auf den Irdischen nicht einen historischen Nachweis, wie es uberhaupt moglich gewesen sei, derartige Titel zu applizieren. Enteschatologisierung allein erklart noch gar nichts. Vor allem hat Hahn die Kategorie der ‘Wiederkehr’ Jesu zum Gericht nicht historisch verstandlich machen konnen. Hier handelt es sich aber deutlich um eine ‘prophetische’ Kategorie (Vgl. Anm. 142): Der Verkunder kommt als Zeuge wieder. – Ebensowenig wie F. Hahn kann aber auch Ph. Vielhauer die Applikation judischer Messianologie auf Jesus erklaren: Er rechnet mit einer totalen Umkehrung des judischen Messiasbegriffes, bzw.
