Publisher Summary The chapter discusses the structure, spectroscopy, and reaction pathways of the organic compound belonging to a chemical class correspond to a perchloro-organic compound. The chemical exploration of perchloro-organic chemistry was initiated early in the last century by the simultaneous discovery of three chlorocarbons: perchloroethane, perchloroethylene, and perchlorobenzene. Perchlorination of an alkylaromatic hydrocarbon could a priori be achieved through two routes: either exhaustive chlorination of its aromatic nucleus, followed by that of its side-chain, or vice versa, as shown for the synthesis of perchlorotoluene. The chapter discusses the several factors, which prevented the development of this chemistry. These include (1) the absence of adequate reagents allowing substitution of chlorines for aliphatic or aromatic hydrogens in organic molecules; (2) steric factors, involving the bulkiness of chlorine as a substituent; and (3) electronic effects of chlorine.
