Toward the Coevolution of Novel Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines

TL;DR: This paper investigates the use of artificial evolution to design vertical-axis wind turbine prototypes that are physically instantiated and evaluated under approximated wind tunnel conditions and uses an artificial neural network as a surrogate model to assist learning.
Journal ArticleDOI

Towards the evolution of vertical-axis wind turbines using supershapes

TL;DR: It is shown possible to produce very closely matching designs of a number of 3D objects through the evolution of supershapes produced by Gielis superformula, and to use artificial physical evolution to identify novel and increasingly efficient supershape VAWT designs.
Proceedings ArticleDOI

Towards the Evolution of Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines using Supershapes

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an initial explorations into the use of a simple generative encoding, known as Gielis superformula, that produces a highly flexible 3D shape representation to design VAWTs.
Journal ArticleDOI

Design mining interacting wind turbines

TL;DR: The accuracy of various modelling algorithms used to estimate the fitness of evaluated individuals from the initial experiments is compared; the effect of temporally windowing surrogate model training samples is explored; and alternative coevolution collaboration schemes are examined.

The S-rotor and its applications

ReportDOI

Aerodynamic performance of wind turbines. Final report

TL;DR: In this article, the state-of-the-art performance prediction methods for both horizontal and vertical axis wind turbines are evaluated for various tip loss models and a comparison of these tip models is developed for the ERDA-NASA MOD-O rotor.
ReportDOI

Power generating characteristics of savonius rotors

TL;DR: In this article, an experimental study of the power generating characteristics of Savonius rotors towed through still water was made, and power absorption, drag and side force were measured on six rotors tested in the towing tank over a range of ratios of rotor vane tip peripheral speed divided by rotor advance speed from the free-running to the locked rotor conditions.
