ORGANIC ESTERS ARE REDUCED TO ALDEHYDES BY USING SODIUM ALUMINUM HYDRIDES OF THE FORMULA NAA1HX(OR1)4-X AT A LOW TEMPERATURE, PREFERABLY IN AN ETHER OR AROMATIC HYDROCARBON, R1 IS ETHER LOWER ALKOXY LOWER ALKYL, LOWER DIALKYLAMINO LOWER ALKYL, TETRAHYDROFURFURYL OR PYRANYLMETHYL. THE REACTION IS CARRIED OUT BELOW 0* C. PREFERABLY -40 TO -70* C.
