Prevention of secondary cataract by antimitotic drugs: experimental study.
TLDR
MC and 5-FU could be a promising alternative in the prevention of posterior capsule opacification in albino rabbits and have shown a more potent inhibitory effect than MC.Abstract:
To prevent the development of secondary cataract, mitomycin C (MC, 02 mg/ml) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU, 50 mg/ml) were introduced in the irrigating solution (BSS Plus) during an extracapsular lens extraction in albino rabbits Cellular multiplication in the whole lens capsule was quantified by means of flow cytometry The total number of residual cells in the capsule after lens extraction together with the mitotic phases of the cell cycle were studied A statistically significant difference (p < 0005, Student t test) was obtained between the two groups treated with antimitotics when compared with the control group regarding the inhibition of mitosis in the capsular cell population together with the total cell number However, 5-FU has shown a more potent inhibitory effect than MC (p < 0005, Student t test) We did not record any ocular complication during a postoperative period of 2 months MC and 5-FU could be a promising alternative in the prevention of posterior capsule opacificationread more

TL;DR: Cortical cleanup in cataract surgery is warranted for significant reduction in incidence or the elimination of PCO, and more attention to the hydrodissection step of the procedure is likely a practical, immediately implementable, and inexpensive remedy.

Posterior capsule opacification. Part 1: Experimental investigations
TL;DR: Clinical and experimental investigations of PCO, focusing on developments since 1992, are looked at, including methods of culturing human LECs obtained by capsulotomy during cataract surgery to provide an in vitro model for investigating the pathophysiology and molecular biology of lens epithelial cells (LECs).

TL;DR: Hyddissection is the best available, practical, immediately implementable, and inexpensive means to help remove equatorial E-cells and thus alleviate the incidence of posterior capsule opacification.

The Clinical Applications of Fluorouracil in Ophthalmic Practice
TL;DR: When applied topically, 5-FU has a low rate of sight-threatening adverse effects, is inexpensive, and is easy to administer, making it an important tool in enhancing the success rate in ophthalmic surgery and in reducing the recurrence of ocular surface neoplasia.

Posterior capsule opacification and anterior capsule opacification.
TL;DR: Experimental and clinical studies have led to a better understanding of the pathogenesis of the development of anterior and posterior capsule opacification; more objective and better comparable systems of documentation and analysis of PCO; and a number of surgical and pharmaceutical strategies to prevent PCO.
