Journal ArticleDOI

Retinal microvascular abnormalities and their relationship with hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and mortality.

TL;DR: There is no convincing evidence of an independent or direct association with atherosclerosis, ischemic heart disease, or cardiovascular mortality, but when reliably quantified, retinal microvascular abnormalities may be useful as risk indicators for cerebrovascular diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI

Hypertensive retinopathy signs as risk indicators of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

TL;DR: Data support the concept that an assessment of retinal vascular changes may provide further information for vascular risk stratification in persons with hypertension, and show that hypertensive retinopathy signs are strongly associated with blood pressure, but inconsistently associated with cholesterol and other risk factors of atherosclerosis.
Journal ArticleDOI

“Strict” blood pressure control and progression of renal disease in hypertensive nephrosclerosis

TL;DR: A long-term prospective randomized trial to determine whether "strict" [diastolic blood pressure ( DBP) 65 to 80 mm Hg] versus "conventional" (DBP 85 to 95mm Hg) blood pressure control is associated with a slower rate of decline in glomerular filtration rate.
Journal ArticleDOI

Hypertensive Retinopathy: Description, Classification, and Prognosis

TL;DR: In 1898 Marcus Gunn described the changes in retinal vessels noted with hypertension, and little has been added to the description of hypertensive retinopathy in the 83 intervening years, but understanding has increased.
Journal ArticleDOI

Risk predictors, risk indicators, and benefit factors in hypertension

TL;DR: The recent British Medical Research Council mild hypertension trial demonstrated that blood pressure reduction was highly effective in preventing stroke, although there were important differences between smokers and nonsmokers with regard to the efficacy of individual drugs.
