Risk factors for anaesthetic-related death in cats: results from the confidential enquiry into perioperative small animal fatalities (CEPSAF)

TLDR
In this article, a nested case-control study was conducted in 117 UK veterinary centres and the overall risk of anaesthetic and sedation-related death was 0.24% (95% CI 0.20-0.27).

The risk of death: the confidential enquiry into perioperative small animal fatalities.

TL;DR: Small animal anaesthesia appears to be increasingly safe, and greater patient care in the postoperative period could reduce fatalities.

2013 AAHA/AAFP Fluid Therapy Guidelines for Dogs and Cats*

TL;DR: These guidelines provide recommendations for fluid administration for anesthetized patients and patients with fluid disturbances and assist the clinician in prioritizing goals, selecting appropriate fluids and rates of administration, and assessing patient response to therapy.

Perioperative mortality in small animal anaesthesia.

TL;DR: Knowledge of factors associated with anaesthetic-related death and high risk peri-operative periods could aid patient management and reduce complications.
Journal ArticleDOI

Results of the confidential enquiry into perioperative small animal fatalities regarding risk factors for anesthetic-related death in dogs.

TL;DR: Specific factors could be associated with increased odds of anesthetic-related death in dogs, and knowledge of these factors should aid the preoperative assessment and perioperative management of dogs undergoing anesthesia and sedation.

Applied Logistic Regression

TL;DR: Hosmer and Lemeshow as discussed by the authors provide an accessible introduction to the logistic regression model while incorporating advances of the last decade, including a variety of software packages for the analysis of data sets.

Veterinary Epidemiologic Research

TL;DR: Some of the lines in some of the Figures are printed very faintly (and in some cases are almost invisible), which was a surprise as the Figures had all printed perfectly well when the galley proofs were examined.

Dichotomizing continuous predictors in multiple regression: a bad idea.

TL;DR: It is argued that the simplicity achieved is gained at a cost; dichotomization may create rather than avoid problems, notably a considerable loss of power and residual confounding.

Methods and applications

TL;DR: A survey of sampling principles can be found in this paper, where the authors present sample designs for some common sampling problems such as bias and non-sampling errors in survey results.

Sampling of Populations: Methods and Applications

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the use of sample surveys in estimating the proportion of the population to the sample population in a complex sample survey, and present several sample survey design and estimation methods.
