TLDR
In this article, the stability of pillar workings is discussed by generalizing the simple mechanism of the laboratory test to the mining situation, and it is proved that the workings will remain stable, regardless of the magnitude of the convergence experienced by the pillars, if the minimum slope of the load-convergence relations is greater than the smallest eigenvalue of K taken with a negative sign.

Improvement of the Loading Capacity of Narrow Coal Pillars and Control Roadway Deformation in the Longwall Mining System. A Case Study at Khe Cham Coal Mine (Vietnam)

TL;DR: In this article, a study related to the stability and safety of roadways and small coal pillars in the long-wall mining system has been carried out, where the bearing structure of the coal pillar and the around rock a roadway is analyzed and it was shown that enhancing roadway support and improving the carrying capacity of coal pillars can control the deformation of the surrounding rock.

Instability and pillar burst mechanism in roof-pillar system with rock beam embedded in elastic foundation

TL;DR: In this article, the instability mechanism and evolution process of a pillar burst for a rock beam embedded in an elastic foundation (EF) are investigated, where the unmined orebody (UMO) is considered to be an EF; the pillar's strain-softening behavior is described by a Weibull distribution.

Numerical Study on the Movement Laws of Overlying Strata in Shallow-Buried Stope Based on the Goaf Compaction Effect

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an integrated approach including the theoretical analysis and numerical modelling to investigate the failure characteristics of the overlying strata in the shallow-buried stope.
Book ChapterDOI

Monitoring the behavior of a sill pillar at failure in a narrow-vein mine

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used vibrating wire proving rings and short extensometers, installed in boreholes to monitor radial and axial displacements in three orthogonal directions.

A study of the strength of coal pillars

TL;DR: In this paper, the strength of coal pillars in South African collieries is derived based on data obtained from a survey of actual mining dimensions, which include information concerning both stable and collapsed areas of mining.

The failure of rock

TL;DR: In this paper, an analysis of the energy changes associated with the extension of Griffith cracks in tension and compression is made, which shows that the non-elastic behaviour can be described by a curved Griffith locus in the strain-stress plane.
