This paper takes a new approach to studying the significant factors that determined the number of Catholic priests in Europe between 1950 and 2006. Using panel data analysis, we found a quadratic relation between the number of Catholic priests per Catholic population and real income per capita. We also identified other factors that are related to the historical role of Catholicism in the country: the fertility rate, the proportion of urban residents, and the proportion immigrant population.

Resumo Este artigo aborda o processo de transformacao da representacao social da familia veiculada na Revista Familia Crista entre 1962 e 2011. Foi realizada analise lexical de 323 artigos, selecionados em 100 exemplares. A discussao foi pautada em construtos como influencia social, ideologia e representacoes sociais. A ideologia crista catolica fundamenta o discurso da revista, mas a representacao e moldada em funcao das mudancas socio-historicas e da influencia de diversos saberes e instituicoes, gerando multiplos sentidos: a familia patriarcal como responsabilidade da mulher mae abnegada; as familias diversificadas e estruturadas em situacao de violencia e miseria; a familia educadora que deve submeter-se a ciencia; a familia crista que deve seguir normas e praticas da igreja e, finalmente, a familia em crise por afastar-se dos valores religiosos. A revista vai modificando seu discurso sobre a familia com vistas a manutencao de seu poder de influencia e propagacao de valores catolicos.

A representação social da família em transformação: cinquenta anos na revista família cristã

The article foregrounds Father Paulo Ricardo’s role in the political history of the present time and in the building of the political-religious guidelines that helped the shaping and mobilization of Jair Bolsonaro’s extreme rightwing project, from 2018’s candidacy to the presidency, but mainly in the face of time management of the Covid-19 pandemic. From the notion of Christofascism, as a “theology of authoritarian power,” one seeks to understand how the referred priest helps in intellectual production, hence sustaining the governmental summit mainly with the arrival of Covid-19 in the country. The article also seeks to use the notion of “trajectory” by Giovanni Levi to trace the last years of the priest’s religious activity, mainly from his productions on social media of political-religious appeal, when Father Paulo Ricardo directly feeds what we call Bolsonaro’s “Christofascism” with themes that help in the “war of the gods” promoted in this condition, in contempt for science and helping to feed this new type of authoritarianism experienced in contemporary Brazil.

The Current Political Path of an Ultra-Catholic Agent of Brazilian Christofacism Father Paulo Ricardo

This work aims at testing a large range of hypotheses that focus on the evidence of the diminishing number of catholic priests. The data are from the Portuguese reality observed between 1960 and 2002. These hypotheses are related to the recent socio-economic evolution verified in Portugal. As main findings, it is highlighted that the strongest long-term factor is the rate of fertilit y. Other relevant causes are the "fear of the future" in the youth and the descending number of other religious people. The economic growth (suggested by the real GDP per capita) is not characterized by a significant coefficient.
