System, method and computer program product for storing multiple types of information

TLDR
In this paper, a method for storing multiple types of information, including information representative of a content of a persistent memory entity at a certain point in time, and information representing a state of a virtual machine at the same time, is proposed.
Abstract
A method for storing multiple types of information, the method includes: storing information representative of a content of a persistent memory entity at a certain point in time; and storing information representative of a state of a virtual machine at the certain point in time. A computer program product including a computer usable medium including a computer readable program, wherein the computer readable program when executed on a computer causes the computer to: store information representative of a content of a persistent memory entity at a certain point in time; and store information representative of a state of a virtual machine at the certain point in time.

Creating host-level application-consistent backups of virtual machines

TL;DR: In this paper, a host server hosting one or more virtual machines can back up host volumes and the virtual machines installed thereon in an application-consistent manner, which can be retrieved from within the host-level snapshots of the server volumes.

Virtual machine change block tracking

TL;DR: In this article, the first write operation generated by the VM to store data in a first sector, determine an identity of the first sector based on the intercepted write operation, and modify the entry in the change block bitmap file to indicate that data in the first sectors has changed.

Efficient live-mount of a backed up virtual machine in a storage management system

TL;DR: In this article, an enhanced media agent may pre-stage certain backed up data blocks which may be needed to launch the virtual machine, based on predictive analysis pertaining to the VM's operational profile.

Archiving virtual machines in a data storage system

TL;DR: In this article, a data storage system according to certain aspects can manage the archiving of virtual machines to (and restoring of virtual machine from) secondary storage, which can determine whether to archive virtual machines based on usage data or information.

Efficiently restoring execution of a backed up virtual machine based on coordination with virtual-machine-file-relocation operations

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a virtual machine-file-relocation operation that moves data blocks originating in the backup copy to a primary storage destination that becomes the virtual machine's primary data store after the relocation operation completes.

Mechanism for restoring, porting, replicating and checkpointing computer systems using state extraction

TL;DR: In this article, the state information of a computer system is extracted as checkpoints at one or more respective points during operation of the system, and the checkpoint may be restored at any later time, even multiple times, and it may also be loaded into other systems; all systems loaded with the same checkpoint will then execute from the same state.

Disaster recovery and backup using virtual machines

TL;DR: In this article, a carrier medium is used to enable the execution of a first virtual machine, where the computer system is configured to capture a state of the first VM, the state corresponding to a point in time of execution of the VM, and copy at least a portion of the state to a destination separate from a storage device to which the VM is suspendable.

Mechanism to store information describing a virtual machine in a virtual disk image

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a mechanism for making information about the virtual disk image file and/or its associated virtual image configuration file more readily available to a user. But the mechanism is limited to the case where the file content, compatible HW configurations, compatible host OSes, timeout status, DRM status, patch state, and network topology, tag data for indexing, configuration files, saved state files, operation history data, and the like can be read without executing the virtual machine.

Failing over a virtual machine

TL;DR: In this paper, a carrier medium comprises first instructions which, when executed, initiate a failover of a first virtual machine to a second virtual machine, in response to a failure.

Methods and apparatus for recording write requests directed to a data store

TL;DR: In this article, a storage management device records write requests that are directed to a data store and maintains, for each first database table, at least one record in a second database table.
