TLDR
2-Methyl-4(5)-nitroimidazoles reacted with Ninhydrin to yield a characteristic green color, a new color reaction for this reagent and appears to involve condensation of the ninhydrin molecule on an active methylene group on an imidazole ring.

Antitrichomonad Action, Mutagenicity, and Reduction of Metronidazole and Other Nitroimidazoles

TL;DR: The results underscore the role of the reduction of the nitro group in the antitrichomonad and in the mutagenic activity of nitroimidazoles.

Hypoxia-dependent Reduction of 1-(2-Nitro-1-imidazolyl)-3-methoxy-2-propanol by Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells and KHT Tumor Cells in Vitro and in Vivo

TL;DR: Investigation of incubation of Chinese hamster ovary cells and KHT murine fibrosarcoma tumor cells with 1-[2-14C]nitro-1-imidazolyl)-3-methoxy-2-propanol suggests that some nitro compounds may be useful for the treatment of tumors having a high fraction of hypoxic cells even in the absence of radiation.

Advances in Imidazole Chemistry

TL;DR: In this article, a review of the developments in imidazole chemistry is presented, including the properties of the 1-acylimidazoles (imidazolides), which are extremely reactive in such nucleophilic reactions as hydrolysis and alcoholysis.

Effect of metronidazole on hydrogen production by Clostridium acetobutylicum

TL;DR: It seems that additional reasons might have to be sought to explain the unique effectiveness of metronidazole as an antimicrobial agent.

Absorptiometric, Polarographic, and Gas Chromatographic Assays for the Determination of N-1-substituted Nitroimidazoles in Blood and Urine

TL;DR: The absorptiometric assay was used in the determination of blood level fall-off curves and urinary excretion of each compound in a dog following the administration of single 10-mg./kg dose, while the GLC assay was use to extend the limits of detection of the absorpt iometric assay and to determine the blood level falls-off curve in man following a single oral 50-mg.

The metabolism of metronidazole (1 -2′-hydroxyethyl-2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole)

TL;DR: The urine contained unchanged metronidazole, the corresponding acid, 2-methyl-5-nitroimidazoles-1-ylacetic acid, and a second metabolite which has been tentatively identified as the ether glucuronide of metronidsazole (III).
