The idea exposure paradigm in design idea generation

The results showed that positive design outcome was correlated with the commonality of examples presented, whereas the amount of examples did not show a respective effect, indicating that common examples cause more fixation than novel ones.
Abstract
This paper presents a design experiment that was conducted to study the effects of idea exposure in design idea generation. Earlier studies have shown that idea exposure can stimulate and interfere with cognitive processes relating to succeeding idea generation, which in turn results in either process gains or losses concerning design outcome. However, fairly little is known about the network and interplay between supplementary effects of idea exposure. Perhaps the most relevant form of cognitive interference in creative design problem-solving is design fixation. Designers may become influenced by presented solutions, so that they reproduce features or principles instead of finding new ways to fulfil functional requirements. In the experiment, subjects were exposed to different amounts and types of examples prior to idea generation. Idea generation performance was measured by the amount of new concepts produced by each subject. The results showed that positive design outcome was correlated with the common...

Crowdsourcing New Product Ideas Over Time: An Analysis of Dell's Ideastorm Community

TL;DR: Studying Dell's IdeaStorm community, serial ideators are found to be more likely than consumers with only one idea to generate an idea the organization finds valuable enough to implement, but they are unlikely to repeat their early success once their ideas are implemented.

Crowdsourcing New Product Ideas over Time: An Analysis of the Dell IdeaStorm Community

TL;DR: Ramdas et al. as mentioned in this paper found that serial ideators are more likely than consumers with only one idea to generate an idea the organization finds valuable enough to implement, but they are unlikely to repeat their early success once their ideas are implemented.

A Study of Design Fixation, Its Mitigation and Perception in Engineering Design Faculty

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluated the effects of design fixation in a group of engineering design faculty, and also provided evidence for approaches to overcome design fixation and demonstrated that design fixation can be mitigated.

An Experimental Study of Group Idea Generation Techniques: Understanding the Roles of Idea Representation and Viewing Methods

TL;DR: This study systematically investigates the underlying factors of four common concept generation techniques: brainsketching, gallery, 6-3-5, and C-sketch and suggests that a hybrid of methods should be used to maximize the quality and number of ideas.

Fixation and creativity in concept development: the attitudes and practices of expert designers

TL;DR: Recognising fixation episodes and reflecting on them was described as the means by which designers could guard against such episodes in the future and thus be more creative.

Productivity loss in brainstorming groups: Toward the solution of a riddle.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate free riding, evaluation apprehension, and production blocking as explanations of the difference in brainstorming productivity typically observed between real and nominal groups and conclude that production blocking accounted for most of the productivity loss of real brainstorming groups.

Search of associative memory.

TL;DR: The search of associative memory (SAM) as discussed by the authors ) is a general theory of retrieval from long-term memory that combines features of association network models and random search models, and it posits cue-dependent probabilistic sampling and recovery from an associative network.

The Emerging Conceptualization of Groups as Information Processors

TL;DR: In this review, the authors include research on processing objectives, attention, encoding, storage, retrieval, processing, response, feedback, and learning in small interacting task groups that underscores several characteristic dimensions of variability in group performance of cognitive tasks.
