This study examines the relationship between Spanish literature and political opposition under the Franco regime. Chapter 1 introduces the concept of a political discourse that characterizes a historical era, specifically addressing that of the Franco era in Spain. Directly linked to the idea of a political discourse is the theory of a literary generation, united by the common experiences or characteristics of a specific time period, such as those of the Franco regime. Together, these two concepts helped establish a foundation for the transition to democracy in Spain. Chapter 2 discusses the mythic foundations of Spanish culture in general, and of Spanish literature and politics in particular. Various biblical and mythical concepts and symbols embedded in the Spanish culture were employed by both the regime, to maintain the status quo, and the opposition, in an effort to disrupt the status quo. Chapter 3 examines the presence of alienation that is found within Francoist Spain. This isolation extends from the national level to the individual level, and is a predominant theme expressed in the literature of the era. Chapter 4 discusses the use of coercive force by the regime to maintain its society and the disruptive force employed by the opposition to protest Francoist society. El panorama literario de la Espana de los 50 esta indefectiblemente marcado por la irrupcion en el mundo de las letras de la generacion del Mediosiglo. Como indica una de sus integrantes, Josefina Rodriguez, los miembros de dicha promocion de escritores comparten el haber nacido “entre 1925 y 1928 o poco mas” y haber sufrido el impacto de la guerra civil cuando “teniamos 8, 9, 10, 11 anos; la edad de la infancia consciente” (9). Pero sobre todo los singulariza el hecho de haber experimentado la toma de conciencia que, de forma gradual, los distancia de los valores vigentes y los hace evolucionar desde el llamado falangismo de izquierdas hacia posturas que, en ocasiones, devienen claramente antifranquistas. De ese modo, el citado proceso ideologico desemboca en el inconformismo ante la vida politica, cultural y social del pais que, con frecuencia, aparece reflejado en las obras de estos autores. Su voluntad de ruptura con la generacion anterior, asi como la necesidad de encontrar referentes propios, tiene tambien su correlato formal en la adopcion del cuento como genero “distintivo de la literatura joven” (Sanz Villanueva 1991, 19), probablemente porque, como apunta Oscar Barrero, en los 50 el relato breve “era el medio ideal para aproximarse a la realidad de lo cotidiano”. “Si la vida diaria se compone de multiples fragmentos de insignificancia –anota el critico–, nada mejor que desintegrarla para extraer de ella literatura realista” (122). Por esta razon, muchos de los escritores del Mediosiglo convierten la realidad del momento en el trasunto literario de sus relatos y hacen del cuento el medio de expresion propicio a traves del cual denunciar –de manera implicita o explicita– los aspectos negativos de la sociedad a la que el artista pertenece.

espanolLas novelas analizadas describen la realidad de la posguerra a traves de los ojos de ninos y adolescentes: Pepe Garces en Cronica del alba (1942) por Ramon Sender; Daniel, «El Mochuelo», en El camino (1950), por Miguel Delibes; y Matia y Borja en Primera Memoria (1960), por Ana Maria Matute. Cada novelista retrata valores y virtudes especificas y sus contrarios polares: (1) amor y compasion contra odio y venganza, y (2) valor y fortaleza de espiritu contra traicion y cobardia.
