Steam Railroad Electrification in America, 1920-1950: The Unrealized Potential

TL;DR: A dozen American trunk line railroads are presently considering the feasibility of converting hundreds of miles of their most heavily traveled routes from diesel to electric motive power as mentioned in this paper, and at least several of these roads are on the verge of committing themselves to long-term, multi-billion dollar electrification programs that could have a profound impact on the railroad industry and the national transportation network as a whole.
