TLDR
The optical klystron is a modification of an undulator which can be used to improve the gain of an FEL oscillator or to enhance the coherent spontaneous emission originating from electron bunching.
Abstract
The optical klystron is a modification of an undulator which can be used to improve the gain of an FEL oscillator or to enhance the coherent spontaneous emission originating from electron bunching. It is most useful when long enough straight sections are not available or when the energy spread is extremely small.

Harmonic-generation experiments on the Mark III free electron laser

TL;DR: In this article, the authors showed that the bundwidths of the harmonics are considerably larger than predicted by simple theory, and they measured spatial profiles, small-signal rise times, and ratios of coherent/incoherent harmonic emission.
