TLDR
The number of rural hospitals decreased over the last decade, the number of large, academic medical centers has increased; in turn, there has been an almost doubling in thenumber of people who live outside a 60-minute driving range to a hospital capable of performing surgery.

Association of County-Level Social Vulnerability with Elective Versus Non-elective Colorectal Surgery.

TL;DR: Patients residing in vulnerable communities characterized by a high social vulnerability were more likely to undergo a non-elective colon resection for either diverticulitis or colon cancer, and patients from high SVI areas had a higher risk of postoperative complications, as well as index hospitalization expenditures, but there were no differences in mortality or readmission rates.
Journal ArticleDOI

Association of Neighborhood Characteristics with Utilization of High-Volume Hospitals Among Patients Undergoing High-Risk Cancer Surgery.

TL;DR: Patients residing in communities of high social vulnerability were less likely to undergo high-risk cancer surgery at a high-volume hospital and society-based contextual disparities in access to complex surgical care were identified.

Trends in Renal Tumor Surgery in the United States and Germany Between 2006 and 2014: Organ Preservation Rate Is Improving.

TL;DR: The robotic approach is a key driver for better implementation of NSS in the United States, and relevant potential still may exist for more organ preservation.

Accessing surgical care for pancreaticoduodenectomy: Patient variation in travel distance and choice to bypass hospitals to reach higher volume centers.

TL;DR: Evaluated travel patterns of patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy for pancreatic cancer to assess willingness of patients to travel for surgical care.
Journal ArticleDOI

Examining healthcare inequities relative to United States safety net hospitals.

TL;DR: Overall degree of safety net burden was associated with worse overall outcomes, and SN hospitals did not mitigate racial disparities experienced by minority patients.

Surgeon volume and operative mortality in the United States.

TL;DR: For many procedures, the observed associations between hospital volume and operative mortality are largely mediated by surgeon volume, and patients can often improve their chances of survival substantially, even at high-volume hospitals.
Journal ArticleDOI

Trends in hospital volume and operative mortality for high-risk surgery.

TL;DR: Although increased market concentration and hospital volume have contributed to declining mortality with some high-risk cancer operations, declines in mortality with other procedures are largely attributable to other factors.

Area Deprivation and Widening Inequalities in US Mortality, 1969–1998

TL;DR: Areal inequalities in mortality widened because of slower mortality declines in more deprived areas, and future research needs to examine population-level social, behavioral, and medical care factors that may account for the increasing gradient.
Journal ArticleDOI

Making Neighborhood-Disadvantage Metrics Accessible - The Neighborhood Atlas.

TL;DR: Making Neighborhood-Disadvantage Metrics Accessible Better understanding of variations in neighborhood disadvantage could lead to improved insight into the sociobiologic mechanisms that underlie health disparities, which could facilitate the development of improved therapeutics and interventions.

A regional intervention to improve the hospital mortality associated with coronary artery bypass graft surgery. The Northern New England Cardiovascular Disease Study Group

TL;DR: It is concluded that a multi-institutional, regional model for the continuous improvement of surgical care is feasible and effective and may have applications in other settings.
