Journal ArticleDOI

Improved Skill for the Anomaly Correlation of Geopotential Heights at 500 hPa

TL;DR: In this article, an ensemble of global multimodels and a model-weighted ensemble mean called the superensemble were used to predict the 500-hPa geopotential.
Journal ArticleDOI

A model for real-time quantitative rainfall forecasting using remote sensing: 1. Formulation

TL;DR: In this paper, a physically based rainfall forecasting model for real-time hydrologic applications is developed with emphasis on utilization of remote sensing observations, which is derived from conservation of mass in a cloud column as defined by the continuity equations for air, liquid water, water vapor and cloud water.
Journal ArticleDOI

Hurricane Katrina (2005). Part II: Evolution and Hemispheric Impacts of a Diabatically Generated Warm Pool

TL;DR: In this paper, an analysis of Hurricane Katrina's outflow layer after landfall suggests that it does not itself make up the long-lived midlatitude warm pool, and the slow progression of a strong upper-tropospheric warm pool across the North Atlantic Ocean in the week following Katrina's landfall prompts the question of whether even a nonreintensifying ET event can lead to significant modification of the mid-latitude flow.
Journal ArticleDOI

Climatology of Cloud and Radiation Fields in a Numerical Weather Prediction Model

TL;DR: In this article, satellite-derived datasets are used to verify the cloud cover and radiation field generated by a T62 (horizontal resolution) version of the operational global model at the National Meteorological Centre (NMC).

Variational Assimilation of Meteorological Observations With the Adjoint Vorticity Equation. I: Theory

TL;DR: In this paper, a variational approach is taken to the problem of assimilation of meteorological observations: find the solution of the assimilating model which minimizes a given scalar function measuring the distance between a model solution and the available observations.
Book ChapterDOI

Data assimilation in meteorology and oceanography

TL;DR: A review of current operational practice and of advanced data assimilation techniques in meteorology can be found in this article, where the authors provide a review of the most advanced data-assimilation techniques for meteorological and oceanographic data.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Step-Mountain Coordinate: Physical Package

TL;DR: In this article, a comprehensive physical package has been developed for a regional eta coordinate model with the steplike mountain representation, and the Level 2.5 turbulence closure model in the Mellor-Yamada hierarchy was chosen to represent the turbulence above the surface layer.
Journal ArticleDOI

Description of the NMC Global Data Assimilation and Forecast System

TL;DR: The National Meteorological Center's (NMC) Global Data Assimilation and Forecast System is described in some detail.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Step-Mountain Coordinate: Model Description and Performance for Cases of Alpine Lee Cyclogenesis and for a Case of an Appalachian Redevelopment

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present the design of the model (silhouette averaged) mountains, properties of the wall boundary condition, and the scheme for calculation of the potential to kinetic energy conversion.
