TLDR
Semen samples from two infertile men showed normal numbers of cells, but the majority of the spermatozoa were abnormal in shape and had very poor motility, suggesting certain infections and exposure to various toxic substances can result in such changes.
Abstract
Semen samples from two infertile men showed normal numbers of cells, but the majority of the spermatozoa were abnormal in shape and had very poor motility. The majority of the spermatozoa showed red fluorescence when stained with acridine orange, indicating the presence of single-stranded DNA. At the ultrastructural level the chromatin was decondensed to various degrees. The acrosomes were either lacking or highly abnormal in appearance. Abnormal tail elements were liberally scattered all over in the abnormal cells. Based on these findings and previous reports, it is suggested that certain infections and exposure to various toxic substances can result in such changes.

Sperm nuclear stability and male infertility

TL;DR: Recent available evidence suggests that living spermatozoa with abnormal chromatin, leading to abnormal morphology, have a strongly reduced capacity to fertilize an oocyte, and if these spermatoozoa fertilize oocytes, the embryonal development will most probably be abnormal.

Fertilization potential of spermatozoa with abnormal morphology

TL;DR: Results and the success of ICSI proved that severe sperm defects have no predictive value and do not impair the fertilization process, and also that the maturity of spermatozoa does not play an important role.

Relation of mammalian sperm chromatin heterogeneity to fertility.

TL;DR: Flow cytometry of heated sperm nuclei revealed a significant decrease in resistance to in situ denaturation of spermatozoal DNA in samples from bulls, mice, and humans of low or questionable fertility when compared with others of high fertility.

A test for the practical evaluation of male fertility by acridine orange (AO) fluorescence.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors introduced the concept of an effective sperm count, which is obtained by multiplying the percentage of green-fluorescing sperm by the actual sperm count and found that the percent green correlates with neither actual sperm counts nor motility, indicating that this test measures a new parameter of male fertility.

TL;DR: A possible correlation is discussed between the long-lasting drug addiction and morphological sperm abnormality, endocrinological function, karyotype, and immunological status.
