Abstract
In the early seventeenth century, navigators and merchants of different nations attended the waters of the territory now known as Brazilian Amazon, corresponding to the ancient State of Maranhao and Grao-Para (1621-1770). The objective of this paper is to discuss the relationship between Portugal and Spain with other European competitors in Atlantic scenario using as case study attempts to Tuscany navigation to the north of Portuguese America.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the general outlines of that strategy of the Portuguese monarchy in the seventeenth century, with the beginning of the implementation of a policy of transporting couples from the Azores in order to establish the basis of white settlement in the imperial frontier in the Amazon region (Para and Maranhao), a process that was only interrupted with the independence of Brazil in 1822.
