Given a desired three-axis reorientation, it is well known that there are, in general, twelve possible sequences of three successive rotations about orthogonal axes which will perform the reorientation. The present paper determines whether the maneuver can or cannot be accomplished with three successive rotations aobut arbitrary (not necessarily orthogonal) axes. This result is then employed to derive conditions on the axes which insure that every rotation may be so generated. The associated angles of all the possible three-legged slews are exhibited by a closed analytical procedure which requires no assumptions concerning the degree of nonorthogonality nor any approximations. The classical orthogonal case (Euler angles) is then an immediate consequence as a special case of the generalized solution.

The direction assigned to the magnetic field today derives historically from magnetic navigation. The author argues that this is a null direction and that the true action of the magnetic field occurs in a plane perpendicular to the conventional direction. This has been recognized in physics since Ampere, but the momentum of tradition and the mathematical convenience of established conventions and notation appears to have prevented its widespread acceptance.

The article deals with some problems of the theory of elasticity for domains bounded by non-concentric circles by taking into account surface effects such as surface elasticity and surface stresses. The solutions are obtained by expanding variables written in a bipolar coordinate system into Fourier series. The values of surface stresses and stress concentrations that are of our interest are obtained using recurrence relations. The contribution made by surface effects is considered.

Influence of Surface Effects in the Problems of the Theory of Elasticity for Domains Bounded by Non-Concentric Circles

We have investigated the difference in persistence between male and female students while taking undergraduate physics courses. To quantify the persistence of a certain group of students, we have defined ‘persistence index’ as the inverse of the decrease rate of the number of that group of students while taking a specific course. We have collected the data from three consecutive workshops on various topics of physics. After plotting the number of participations against the number of days attended, we have calculated the decrease rates and persistence indices for both male and female student groups on each workshop and compared the persistence indices on a bar diagram. The comparative statistics show that the persistence indices of female student groups are significantly higher than that of male student groups. This leads us to the conclusion that the female students are more persistent than male students while taking an undergraduate physics course.
