Bile salt media have been in use since 1900, and during the seven years which have elapsed it has been shown that B. typhosus, B. enteritidis (Gaertner), B. coli communis and similar organisms grow on these media just as well as on any other nutrient media. At 37°C. the growth of most of the organisms of the air and soil is inhibited by bile salt media.These media can therefore be used with confidence for the isolation of B. typhosus and other intestinal organisms.

’ IN most places the English standard regarding organisms indicative of JL sewage pollution has been adopted. Roughly speaking, this standard may be summed up as follows :(1) Presence of B. coli communis and its varieties. (2) Presence of streptococci. (3) Presence of Iilein’s bacillus. Alost importance, and also the greatest difficulty as to interpretation, attaches to the first item, and as rough guides for forming an opinion when B. coli are found in1 cc. water is to be condemned. 3 cc. &dquo; very suspicious. 5-10 cc. &dquo; suspicious only. above 10 cc. ~ doubtful. I am purposely leav ing out of consideration the presence of streptococci and I~lein’s bacillus, because they do not vitally affect the arguments concerning the presence or absence of B. coli. Although the above standards have served their purpose fairly well, they are applicable only to such waters as are found around large centres, like London; they are quite useless in regions where the surface waters are naturally much purer. Wherever waters, naturally pure, receive a proportionately small amount of sewage, the B. coli will not be found in large numbers, and certainly not in 1 cc. Frequently only detected in much larger quantities, say 20, 50, or even 100 cc. Now, according to English standards, these waters are practically above suspicion, still I have had numerous experiences where waters of this type were actually the direct bearers of disease. Briefly, it is impossible to have standards for all varieties of waters, and so an opinion upon unknown samples is precluded. I wish to submit to you a few ideas found useful by me; I must preface with one or two working principles-(1) I consider the B. coli communis and its varieties as but
