Originality/value - To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first paper to investigate the effects of flexible microfinance loan provision for credit access of small agricultural firms in developing countries in general, and in Madagascar in particular.
The overall findings of study revealed that agricultural loans (short and medium term) constituted more than 90 per cent of total loan advanced over the study period.
Findings This study reconfirmed that agricultural credit has a positive and highly significant effect on wheat productivity, while the short-term loan has a stronger effect on wheat productivity than the long-term loan.
Our results indicate that retention rates of agricultural loan risk ratings are quite high.
This situation is an indication of high level of loan defaulting among the benefiting farmers.
The study provides the following recommendations: it is imperative that bank officials visit farmers on their farms before granting them loans, and also farmers must be granted the required amounts of loan to enhance the rate of agricultural loan allocation to the farm sector to ensure increased productivity of crops grown for increased welfare and livelihood of these farmers and the citizens of the country as a whole.
The survey data obtained determine the relative importance of financial and nonfinancial information when analyzing agricultural loan applications.
The regression’s result demonstrated that the determinants of the group member’s loan repayment included the group member’s age, household size, house income, and educational level, the amount of credit received, length of stay in their locality, distance to the credit source, supervision and disbursement lag. Therefore it was suggested that the various agricultural microcredit finance groups should carefully examine the significant determinants of loan repayment for the approach’s viability and sustainability and for optimum repayment performance.
