The honours year has been reported to have a major influence on subsequent career choice; honours students show greater interest in research and laboratory medicine careers and less in general practice and public health.
It is through such communication that the value of the Honours year in student development can be enhanced
Students increasingly come to college to earn degrees that will lead to employment, and most undergraduates do not perceive of the BA in Political Science as a gateway degree, but rather as a terminal degree.
These multiple meanings create confusion about what Honours stands for and inhibit communication about the role and purpose of Honours both within Australia and in a global context.
This has serious implications for honours programmes.
The responses suggest, inter alia, what subjects are most relevant to their jobs, what improvements in terms of new subjects and enhancement of existing ones are required to strengthen the programme and make it more relevant.
This presents an ideal opportunity to examine the system of awarding honours and to seek answers to two fundamental questions about honours degrees.
Although it is impossible to establish a causal relation between taking the honours course and subsequent academic distinction, the results suggest that the intercalated honours BSc in pathology serves a useful function in introducing able students into academic careers.
However, more significantly, there have been identifiable changes in the structure and nature of Honours programmes over recent years that may not support some of the traditionally held views of Honours, particularly as a selection mechanism for enrolment in, and scholarship ranking for, higher degrees by research.
