The study of tourism and its increasing growth as a field of study can be largely attributed to tourism’s ability to create significant economic benefits and jobs in destinations.
Given government's commitment on tourism as an industry generating both employment and revenue, strong contribution through policy making is necessary in order to improve tourism industry in general and tourism employment in particular.
The study highlights the importance of understanding the views and attitudes of the potential workforce towards tourism jobs.
Positively, they have more opportunities to find jobs in the tourism sector or increase their income when their jobs are related to tourism.
It is shown that the inbound tourism spurs economic growth in India both in long-run and short-run.
The results suggest that aggregate statistics on total jobs created and income generated mask important elements that allow a more complete understanding of the jobs and income created by travel and tourism sectors as they respond to the spending of tourists.
Additionally, we also find that tourism and economic growth in India are inter-related, but the causal effect of tourism on economic growth is stronger than the other way around in both the short- and long-run.
Study findings indicate that the jobs generated by tourism expenditures had a lower income distribution than the overall income distribution in the three regions, with the difference being most apparent in more urban areas.
