Latency of cough response as a measure of antitussive agents.

Abstract: The cough reflex was stimulated in selected healthy male subjects with a single nebulized threshold dose of citric acid. The essential components of the method were deep inhalation by the subjects and the measurement of the required time to elicit the cough reflex. Prolongation of latency was used as a measure of antitussive action. With the use of this parameter, a dose‐response curve was obtained for codeine and dextromethorphan.
