TL;DR: In this paper, a gate valve for use with vacuum equipment is provided in which a gate assembly is opened and closed by a fluid operated device, such as a pneumatic cylinder.
Abstract: A gate valve for use with vacuum equipment is provided in which a gate assembly is opened and closed by a fluid operated device, such as a pneumatic cylinder. The gate assembly is enclosed in a valve housing. The valve housing has aligned openings therein, and the gate assembly is moved reciprocally between the walls and parallel to the planes of the aligned openings therein, to an open position and to a closed position with respect to the openings. The gate assembly comprises two gates which are intercoupled by a bellows, the bellows defining a hermetically sealed pressure vessel with the gates. The gate assembly is coupled to a piston in the pneumatic cylinder by a piston rod. The gate assembly is moved to its closed position when pressurized fluid is introduced to one end of the pneumatic cylinder; and the gate assembly is moved to its open position when pressurized fluid is introduced to the other end of the cylinder. When the gate assembly is moved to its closed position, a valve opens within the pneumatic cylinder, and pressurized fluid from the pneumatic cylinder is caused to enter the pressure vessel between the gates. This pressurized fluid forces the gates against seats mounted on the valve housing around the respective openings therein. Metal seals are provided for the gates, in the form of layers of relatively soft metal around the gates. The valve housing itself may be evacuated to reduce pressure differential across the gate-seat junctions and minimize molecular leakage. Relief grooves are provided adjacent the edges of the gates so that the outer perimeters of the gates are relieved to be deflected when the gates are closed so as to provide a resilient stress on the gate seals. This resilient stress serves to maintain the gates in a sealed condition even in the presence of temperature changes and resulting thermal expansion and contraction.

TL;DR: In this article, a lever is pivotally secured to the housing to perform pivotal movement and operatively connected at its inner end to the other end of the shaft in a lever compartment of the housing and at its outer end to an eccentric cam formed on an engine crankshaft, so that the motion of the cam is transmitted to the shaft as the reciprocal movement through the lever.
Abstract: A diaphragm is interposed between first and second housings to form first and second diaphragm chambers at both sides thereof for pumping out air in accordance with expansion and contraction of the chambers. A shaft for reciprocally moving the diaphragm is connected thereto at one end and extends through a hole formed in a bushing which is fixed to the second housing. A lever is pivotally secured to the housing to perform a pivotal movement and operatively connected at its inner end to the other end of the shaft in a lever compartment of the housing and at its outer end to an eccentric cam formed on an engine crankshaft, so that the motion of the cam is transmitted to the shaft as the reciprocal movement through the pivotal movement of the lever. A bellows is disposed in the second diaphragm chamber surrounding a portion of the shaft, wherein the upper and lower ends are respectively and air-tightly connected to the diaphragm and the bushing to form a bellows chamber. An axially extending groove is formed on either the inner surface of the hole or the outer surface of the shaft, so that the bellows chamber is communicated with the lever compartment by the groove. The compartment is communicated with an engine crankcase and thereby filled with a large amount of engine oil mist. The bellows chamber is also subjected to expansion and contraction in accordance with the reciprocal movement of the shaft to alternately draw into and force out air in the compartment, so that a portion of the mist is forcibly introduced into the groove to lubricate the shaft and the bushing.

TL;DR: In this article, a toy doll has a mouth opening adapted to receive a simulated nursing bottle from which water is fed to the interior of the doll, some of such water producing a wetting action.
Abstract: A toy doll has a mouth opening adapted to receive a simulated nursing bottle from which water is fed to the interior of the doll, some of such water producing a wetting action. The doll is also adapted to produce a burping sound when its back is patted, and simultaneously to spit up through the mouth opening some of the water previously fed from the bottle. The burping sound is produced by a bellows in the body portion of the doll which is successively compressed upon patting the back of the doll and which progressively feeds air into another bellows located in the head of the doll until the head bellows reaches an expanded position. An actuating member then automatically releases the air from the expanded head bellows, which air flows in a sudden controlled flow through a sound producing device. Some of this released air also causes liquid to be emitted from the mouth opening to produce the spitting-up effect.

TL;DR: In this paper, a child's toy which can also be used as a game was described, where a simulated landscape includes a flower or mushroom mounted on a bellows thereon and a second flower mounted thereon.
Abstract: A child's toy which can also be used as a game wherein a simulated landscape includes a flower or mushroom mounted on a bellows thereon and a second flower mounted thereon. The landscape includes an air channel therewithin which includes an intake valve, a passage communicating with the bellows and an outlet valve communicating with the flower. The outlet valve region of the flower includes an elastomeric washer for receiving a balloon simulating a ladybug or the like, the balloon including a nozzle for substantially airtight communication with an insertion into the washer. The sides of the balloon rest on the sides of the flower interior so that, upon inflation of the balloon by reciprocation of the bellows in standard manner, air will come into the inlet valve to the bellows and air channel and, upon contraction of the bellows, pass through the air channel and through the outlet valve into the balloon. The balloon will thereby be inflated until the force of inflation causes expansion of the balloon wall and thereby exerts a sufficient outward force against the sides of the flower to pull the nozzle out of the washer. The inflated balloon will now release the air therefrom through the nozzle and the outlet air jet will cause the balloon to be ejected further from the flower and fly away in known manner. The above described toy can be coverted into a game or utilized as a game by determining the number of depressions of the bellows required to make the balloon fly away or, alternatively by determining the distance from the toy that the balloon flies after release from the flowr.

TL;DR: A molding machine for dispensing at least two materials which, when combined, foam and cure within a mold thereby to form a plastic article is described in this article, where the dispensing is accomplished by displacing measured amounts of hydraulic fluid to a pair of chambers within each of which there is located a stainless steel bellows that is supplied with the respective material from a source thereof under pressure.
Abstract: A molding machine for dispensing at least two materials which, when combined, foam and cure within a mold thereby to form a plastic article. The dispensing is accomplished by displacing measured amounts of hydraulic fluid to a pair of chambers within each of which there is located a stainless steel bellows that is supplied with the respective material from a source thereof under pressure. When the displaced hydraulic fluid causes the bellows to collapse, the materials in the bellows are displaced therefrom into a mixing chamber in the form of high velocity jets and are mixed therein and the mixture is forced from the mixing chamber to the mold cavity to be filled. The bellows are then permitted to expand under the pressure of the material supplied thereto and the machine is ready for a further molding cycle.

TL;DR: A fluid pressure transducer has a sealed capsule with a thin bellows wall of flexible plastics material and rigid end walls attached to a support and to an indicator respectively, so that longitudinal expansion and contraction of the capsule due to variation of the pressure of the fluid in which the capsule is immersed give an indication of this pressure as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: A fluid pressure transducer has a sealed capsule with a thin bellows wall of flexible plastics material and rigid end walls attached to a support and to an indicator respectively, so that longitudinal expansion and contraction of the capsule due to variation of the pressure of the fluid in which the capsule is immersed give an indication of this pressure. The capsule contains a gas which imparts an effective elasticity to the capsule, the elasticity of the bellows wall itself being negligible, so that the length of the capsule is to a close approximation inversely proportional to the applied pressure. For direct pressure measurement the floating end of the capsule may carry an indicator which is visible through a wall of a rigid capsule-enclosing casing to which the pressure to be measured is applied. An instrument for use as a depth gauge may incorporate the transducer, which for this application may include a calibrated flow restrictor through which fluid pressure is applied to the capsule, such that the consequent delay in the depth reading provided by the transducer indicates to a diver the length of successive decompression stops during an ascent from depth.

Abstract: A flexible multi-compartment container is provided for the storage, handling and shipping of fragile disks such as silicon wafers used in the manufacture of integrated circuits. The container comprises a generally tubular hollow bellows section formed of identical longitudinal halves from thin sheets of pliant self-supportable plastic sheet material. Each fold of the bellows section defines an interior annular groove forming a compartment for a disk of corresponding pre-selected or standardized size. Integral with the bellows section are longitudinally flexible end spacers of a diameter greater than the diameter of the bellows section. Each end spacer includes ridges adapted to confront the interior of a rigid outer box for suppotring the bellows section therein. In particular embodiments, the end spacers include an exterior annular ridge and adjacent trough for receiving a rubber band which is used to hold the mating halves together. The annular ridges include an indentation of suitable size to accommodate the insertion of a finger beneath the rubber band in the trough in order to expedite the release of the rubber band and the opening of the container. In addition, each halve of the bellows section includes a longitudinal lip on one side margin and along the opposing side margin an integrally formed resilient longitudinal catch. The catch is formed as a longitudinal fold of an extension of the longitudinal lip. In addition, a longitudinal stiffening backbone is formed along the outer surfaces of the bellows section between the side margins to prevent sag between the end spacers.

Abstract: The motor vehicle air spring has two spring surfaces of different sizes acting in opposite directions, their area being variable dependent on spring movement and coaxially supported from each other. The chamber is formed by two enclosing roller type bellows whose working surfaces, facing away from each other, are supported on spring pistons of different dias. rigidly secured together. Distortion of their loops with spring movement result in vol. alterations counteracting each other. The spring force is transmitted via the pistons on one hand and a sleeve for the bellows walls on the other. The pistons are secured together by a central tension bolt. This bolt is a tube (307) in which an axial guide bar (343) works, coupled to the support formed by the sleeve.

TL;DR: In this article, a low tire pressure detector and magnetic signal sending unit includes a bellows charged to a reference pressure for moving a magnet from a shielded position to a signal emitting position when tire pressure operating outside the bellows decreases to a predetermined value.
Abstract: A low tire pressure detector and magnetic signal sending unit includes a bellows charged to a reference pressure for moving a magnet from a shielded position to a signal emitting position when tire pressure operating outside the bellows decreases to a predetermined value. A latching force is established by the magnet to operate against the bellows force to help maintain the magnet in the shielded or non-signalling position. The magnitude of the latching force is controlled by a polepiece of thin cross section which saturates under the influence of the magnet to limit the latching force to a fixed value. The spring force of the bellows is sufficient in the absence of a pressure differential to overcome the latching force and move the magnet to signalling position. A ferrous slug mounted on the movable end of the bellows is magnetically coupled to the magnet assembly to form a releasable connection between the magnet assembly and the bellows.
