TL;DR: In this article, a large mobile tower crane comprises a vertical multi-section lattice-type tower having its lower end fixedly mounted on the rotatable upper section of a self-propelled vehicle and a load-supporting multiscale crane boom having its base end pivotally mounted on an upper end of the tower.
Abstract: A large mobile tower crane comprises a vertical multi-section lattice-type tower having its lower end fixedly mounted on the rotatable upper section of a self-propelled vehicle and a load-supporting multi-section lattice-type crane boom having its base end pivotally mounted on the upper end of the tower. A load to be lifted, swung and lowered, is attachable to a load line suspended from a pulley at the point end of the boom. The tower is selectively rotatable to swing the boom and the boom is selectively pivotable vertically to desired boom (luffing) angles. A crane control system employs strain gauge-type electronic sensing devices mounted on opposite lateral sides of the crane boom and on a side of the crane tower to provide electric signals pertaining to applied loads. A transducer provides an electric signal pertaining to boom angle. A programmable electronic computer, which processes these signals to calculate down load and side load moments in the boom and torque loads in the tower, provides output signals related thereto which are usable to operate the crane within safe limits. The output signals are usable to operate visual display devices which inform the crane operator of safe operating limits, or to effect automatic operation (subject to manual override) of certain crane functions (swinging, luffing, lifting) within safe limits. The sensing devices in the boom comprise strain gauges which are embodied in clevis bolts or pins which are located on opposite sides of the boom and which mechanically secure together certain sections of the multi-section boom. The strain gauge signals, which pertain to load magnitude in the boom, are added to determine load weight suspended from the boom, and are substracted to determine side load magnitude and direction.

TL;DR: In this article, a boom control system for a boom according to the present invention controls the actuators in either of two modes of operation, the first mode of operation comprising independent control over each actuator to afford polar coordinate operation and the second mode of operator comprising synchronized control over actuators so that the end of the member may be moved in a straight line.
Abstract: Machines having a boom or arm pivotally disposed thereon wherein the length of the boom or arm and the angle thereof with respect to a reference plane are adjustable by means of actuators are well known. However, it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to simultaneously control the actuators in a coordinated fashion to move the end of the boom or arm in a straight line path. In order to overcome this problem, a boom control system for a boom according to the present invention controls the actuators in either of two modes of operation, the first mode of operation comprising independent control over each actuator to afford polar coordinate operation and the second mode of operation comprising synchronized control over the actuators so that the end of the member may be moved in a straight line. Means are provided for manually selecting one of the two modes of operation. Means may be provided for calculating the amount of remaining horizontal throw of the boom or arm when a command to move same is issued.

TL;DR: In this article, a mechanism for use on a boom-type vehicle includes load lifting forks carried by a low profile twist-resistant carriage which is one link in a low-profile parallelogram linkage attached to a fly section of the boom and maintained level in all positions of a boom by a slave cylinder.
Abstract: A mechanism for use on a boom-type vehicle includes load lifting forks carried by a low profile twist-resistant carriage which is one link in a low profile parallelogram linkage attached to a fly section of the boom and maintained level in all positions of the boom by a slave cylinder connected between the boom and a slave link which constitutes a member of the parallelogram linkage. The mechanism can be adjusted to many positions while automatically maintaining the relative position of the forks with respect to the vehicle frame for any boom angle. The mechanism can be adjusted to provide a long reach over or under obstructions in order to remove or place a load. It may also engage loads below ground level. Load pick-up or placement can be performed in confined areas which are unreachable by conventional forklift trucks.

TL;DR: In this paper, an agricultural field sprayer is described, having a main boom center section rigidly mounted on a wheeled motive power source; wing sections of main boom hinged on either side of the center section are each supported on castoring wheels that can be locked in a non-castoring mode for transport; corresponding sections of spray boom and spray tubes with spray nozzles are mounted on the main boom sections to be rotated by rotation of the spray boom.
Abstract: An agricultural field sprayer is described, having a main boom center section rigidly mounted on a wheeled motive power source; wing sections of main boom hinged on either side of the center section are each supported on castoring wheels that can be locked in a non-castoring mode for transport; corresponding sections of spray boom and spray tubes with spray nozzles are mounted on the main boom sections to be rotated by rotation of the spray boom. Power from the motive source is used to rotate the boom. The hinged wing sections can move between an aligned working position along the axis of the center section and a transport position, trailing at right angles behind the center section for transport. In the working position, the power also is used to adjust the spray tube height, to accommodate variable spraying requirements. The wing sections of the boom are partly drawn, in working position, by rigid boom draws which are latched and unlatched from the motive power source by appropriate movement of the spray boom.

TL;DR: In this paper, an oil-spill-combatting water craft for recovering oil which is present on the surface of water is described, where the water craft has at the water level at least one water inlet and, secured just behind this inlet, a collecting boom which extends forwards and outwards, directing water to inside the craft, where there is a separating device for the recovery of the oil from the water.
Abstract: A oil-spill-combatting water craft for recovering oil which is present on the surface of water. The water craft has at the water level at least one water inlet and, secured just behind this inlet, a collecting boom (2) which extends forwards and outwards, directing water to inside the craft, where there is a separating device (5) for the recovery of the oil from the water. In the water craft of this type the difficulty so far has been that, when the craft travels at a somewhat higher speed, water pressure in front of the boom tends to rise so high that some of the oil-contaminated water (3) "escapes" under the boom (2). According to the invention, this is prevented by arranging, for at least part of the water from which the oil has been separated and which discharges from the craft, an outlet just behind the collecting boom (2). For the rest of the discharging water there is preferably arranged an outlet which is located further towards the bow than is the inlet.

TL;DR: Annas comments on two 1986 court decisions involving surrogate motherhood, seeing both decisions as accommodating the law to modern science, and as encouraging commercial surrogacy.
Abstract: Annas comments on two 1986 court decisions involving surrogate motherhood: Surrogate Parenting Associates v. Kentucky and Smith v. Jones. In the first case, the Supreme Court of Kentucky ruled against the state's Attorney General in his attempt to revoke the charter of a company prompting surrogate arrangements. The court determined that the state's prohibition of child purchasing would not be violated if financial arrangements were worked out before conception and if the surrogate mother retained the right to cancel the contract up to the moment she relinquished her parental rights. In Smith v. Jones, a lower court judge in Michigan allowed an infertile ovum donor and her husband to be listed as the parents on a child's birth certificate, rather than the surrogate who had been artificially inseminated. Annas sees both decisions as accommodating the law to modern science, and as encouraging commercial surrogacy.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed an elongated boom supported by a rotatable jib of a tower crane for introducing flowable concrete mix to form systems has a concrete conveying conduit which functions also as a structural member of the boom in order that the overall weight of the latter is minimized.
Abstract: A lightweight boom supported by a rotatable jib of a tower crane for introducing flowable concrete mix to form systems has a concrete conveying conduit which functions also as a structural member of the boom, in order that the overall weight of the latter is minimized. The elongated boom has a triangular configuration in transverse cross-section, with two parallel, co-planar, spaced upper members and a hollow, concrete conveying bottom member that is generally parallel to the two upper members and spaced below the same. Horizontally extending brace members interconnect the two upper members, and spacer bars depending from the two upper members are secured to the bottom member. One aspect of the invention concerns a wheeled cart that is pivotally connected to an end portion of the boom and rests on ground level structure for supporting a portion of the weight of the boom while the jib lifts an opposite end portion of the boom to an elevated position, so that the weight and consequently the length of the boom can be increased without exceeding the carrying capacity of the tower crane. The boom is particularly adapted for tower cranes that are used to fabricate large annular concrete structures such as hyperbolic cooling towers.

TL;DR: A discussion of one section of the Nigerian working class seeks to direct attention to oil workers as active agents in the chaotic aftermath of the oil boom is given in this article, which suggests that sudden declines in the quality of life spur popular protest especially.
Abstract: The oil boom of the 1970s involved an historically unprecedented transfer of funds from oil importing to developing oil exporting countries, members of OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries). Massive cash transfers fueled a kind of import-dependent industrialization, and more important, it established the state as the economic arbiter. The service sector in all OPEC countries expanded the most. Inflation, commoditization and urbanization coincided with the decline of agriculture and crafts. Then in the early 1980s the oil boom ended. Only now are analyses of the significance of the boom and bust on OPEC societies beginning to be made. The following discussion of one section of the Nigerian working class seeks to direct attention to oil workers as active agents in the chaotic aftermath of the oil boom. What are the social implications of the global oil price collapse? This question is posed by the United States Central Intelligence Agency, by the United Nations, by governments, aid agencies and independent analysts. Theory suggests that sudden declines in the quality of life spur popular protest especially

TL;DR: The modern political economy of Argentina dates from around 1860 as mentioned in this paper, when the first great export booms led by wool, and the formation of a national state, emerged in the country.
Abstract: The modern political economy of Argentina dates from around 1860. At this point came the first of the great export booms led by wool, and the formation of a national state. From this time forward Argentina’s population and its chief cities grew rapidly. Its lands were settled by European immigrants. It drew in foreign capital for the development of its railways and a wide variety of urban amenities: tramways, sewage and gas works, and, later on, electricity. Production, now integrally linked with world markets, underwent rapid expansion. This economy persisted largely unchanged until the coming of the world depression in 1930.

TL;DR: In this article, an articulated boom mechanism is utilized for transporting material between a first position and a selectable second position, which is composed of two boom members, one mounted by a universal-type connection to a support base and its other end connected to an articulation member.
Abstract: An articulated boom mechanism is utilized for transporting material between a first position and a selectable second position. The boom mechanism is comprised of two boom members. One boom member has its one end mounted by a universal-type connection to a support base and its other end connected to an articulation member. The other boom member has its one end connected to the articulation member. Bulk solid material entering the one end of one of the boom members is transported on a conveyor belt through that boom member and then on a second conveyor belt through the other of the boom members, and then empties from the other end of the other of the boom members. Bulk solid material is thereby transported by the boom mechanism through a path defined by the selective positioning of the one boom member relative to the support base, and also by the relative orientation between the two boom members.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a method to lessen deviations between excavating speeds in the horizontal direction at the beginning of excavation and the vertical direction by setting up a target angular speed for arm or boom in such a way as not to exceed the maximum angular speed.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To lessen deviations between excavating speeds in the horizontal direction at the beginning of excavation and excavating speeds in the vertical direction by setting up a target angular speed for arm or boom in such a way as not to exceed the maximum angular speed for arm or boom. CONSTITUTION:Setters 10 and 11 to set up maximum flow values QA and QB to be supplied to a boom angular speed detector 7, an arm angular speed detector 8, a bucket angular speed meter 9, an arm cylinder 5, and a boom cylinder 4 and a detector 15 for angular speeds of excavation are built in the body. They are connected to a controller 20 consisting of an input unit 12, an arithmetic unit 13 for target angular speeds of arm and boom, a drive signal output unit 15. The operations of the arm 2 and the boom 1 are controlled by the controller 20 so that target angular speed for arm or boom is less than the maximum value of angular speed for arm or boom. The degree of deviation from the excavating locus can thus be lessened.
