TL;DR: The design and evaluation of a low-cost colorimeter applied to the non-invasive monitoring of Diabetes Mellitus through the detection of glucose in salivary fluid suggest the potential application of the developed device to the sensitive detection of relevant analytes with aLow-cost, user-friendly, low-power and portable instrumentation.
Abstract: Given the limited access to healthcare resources, low-income settings require the development of affordable technology. Here we present the design and evaluation of a low-cost colorimeter applied to the non-invasive monitoring of Diabetes Mellitus through the detection of glucose in salival fluid. Samples were processed by the glucose oxidase-peroxidase enzymatic system and analyzed with the development equipment. A light emission diode of 532.5 nm was used as an excitation source and a RGB module was used as a receptor. A calibration curve to quantify the concentration of salivary glucose (0 to 18 mg/dL) was carried out by relating the RGB components registered with glucose concentrations, achieving a limit of detection of 0.17 mg/dL with a CV of 5% (n = 3). Salivary samples of diabetic and healthy volunteers were processed with the equipment showing an average concentration of 1.5519 ± 0.4511 mg/dL for the first and 4.0479 ± 1.6103 mg/dL for the last, allowing a discrimination between both groups. Results were validated against a UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer with a correspondence of R2 of 0.98194 between both instruments. Results suggest the potential application of the developed device to the sensitive detection of relevant analytes with a low-cost, user-friendly, low-power and portable instrumentation.

TL;DR: In this article, the color of a papaya fruit was evaluated using a scanner and a colorimeter for a period of 19 days, and the results showed that the scanner could be used as a device for color assessment where the determination coefficients were above 0.9 for all color components.
Abstract: color hue is a variable frequently used postharvest to assess the physiological maturity of various fruits. In general, mean color hue is quantified by visual techniques, but this method, based on human grading, is tedious and may be erroneous. The color of fruit peel is frequently determined at four points randomly distributed on the equatorial region of a fruit, but this practice can lead to biased results because these points represent the equatorial region only and not the total area of the fruit peel. consequently, this bias is not due to equipment measurement errors, but to the bias in the sampling process of the points on the fruit epidermis. an alternative to such methods is the digital image which provides information about all regions of the fruit peel, and results in a more accurate mean hue. however, this technique requires calibration to correct the values of luminance, hue and intensity obtained through the scanner. This calibration can be performed from color patterns such that each pattern is assessed by means of a scanner and a colorimeter. Thus, an experiment was conducted using 297 color patterns based on the munssel color chart for plant tissue. The results showed that the scanner could be used as a device for color assessment where the determination coefficients were above 0.9 for all color components. Next, a second experiment was conducted in order to compare the scanner and colorimeter methodologies. For this, we used a papaya fruit, cv. Sunrise Solo, which was assessed by these two devices for a period of 19 days. The results showed that the image analysis measures have a different mean hue when compared with the mean hue obtained by the method using a colorimeter. Therefore, it is recommended that digital image analysis be used for the evaluation of the hue of fruit peel color when fruit presents non-uniform coloration.

Abstract: An on-site determination method for trace arsenic has been developed by collecting it as molybdenum blue (MB) in the presence of tetradecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride on a mixed cellulose ester membrane filter and by measuring reflection absorbance (RA) of MB on the filter using a laboratory-made palm-top size reflection-absorbance colorimeter with a red light-emitting diode. The value of RA was proportional to the amount of arsenic up to 0.5 μg with a detection limit of 0.01 μg. The proposed method was successfully applied to soil extract and hot-spring water samples.

Abstract: The paper deals with the methodology of the scars pigmentation objective assessment and their time evaluation on the base acquired data with the skin colorimeter prototype DSC1 (Detection of Scar Color). The analysis is primarily focused on the hypertrophic scars pigmentation assessment after heeling of deep burns which often exhibit the pigmentation. In the process of the scars evaluation in some patients it goes to the spontaneous pigmentation changes. If the pigmentation changes long-term persist and patient requires corrections, various treatment methods can influence these pigmentation changes (for instance the laser therapy and others). In the context of the complex development evaluation and in the process of the scars treatment, these changes are commonly observable well but their quantification is usually difficult, therefore using of the objective methods is desirable. The particular kind of such objective method is the skin colorimeter. The technical concept and testing of the skin colorimeter prototype DSC1 is presented in this
