Abstract: instructor. I usually make comments in the books about alternative wurces of the forgettings and rememberings, and examples from the journals are presented in class for discussion. In the introductory lecture to the journal project, I suggest some of the kinds of everyday forgettings the students might look for. Reed (1979) gives a partial listing of \"Everyday anomalies of recall and recognition,\" such as forgetting names, not being able to correctly place a person, repetitive checking behaviors, deja vu, and the feeling of knowing. In addition, one might mention the tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon, forgetting of intentions or plans, forgetting places and routes, forgetting of dreams or childhood experiences and examples of motivated forgettings (see chapters in Kihlstrom & Evans, 1979, for discussion of some of these). The students may also want to consider mistakes in their behav~or which occur as a result of false retrieval or retrieval failure (Norman, 1981). Two additional sources concerning everyday forgetting are Freud's Psychopathology of Everyday Life (1901/ 1966), and Neisser's Memory Observed (1 982). Little need be said here concerning the instructor's analysis of the forgettings. After collecting only a few journals, there will be examples of nearly every concept presented in a learning and memory course. One could also use the course material to suggest remedies for the forgetting problems. There are other advantages to this project. The material is intrinsically interesting to the student. One can illustrate research methodology, and point out the strengths and weaknesses of case-study and field research. Finally, the instructor will certainly get to know the students in reading about their lives outside of the class.
