TL;DR: It is concluded that, while neighbour-balanced designs may be useful in certain situations or in combination with other methods, it is preferable to eliminate edge effects by using adequate guard rows.
Abstract: A number of different types of edge effects on experimental plots are defined, and it is shown that they are frequently important in agroforestry experiments. Methods of eliminating edge effects, either at the design or the analysis stage, are described. Computer simulations, based on uniformity data, are used to investigate the efficacy of neighbour-balanced designs, with and without neighbour terms, for reducing the problem of neighbour effects between different treatments. It is concluded that, while neighbour-balanced designs may be useful in certain situations or in combination with other methods, it is preferable to eliminate edge effects by using adequate guard rows. Recommendations are therefore made concerning the correct use of guard areas in agroforestry experimentation.

TL;DR: In this article, two forms of improved guards for a roll-up door are presented, 58 and 59, which prevent shifting cargo from intefering with becoming interlocked with the lowered door.
Abstract: This invention provides two forms of improved guards for a roll-up door. The first form ( 58 or 59) is intended to prevent shifting cargo from intefering with becoming interlocked with the lowered door. This form has a vertically-elongated guard which is adapted to overlie the vertically-spaced hinges, and has opposite marginal end portions closely spaced to the knuckle portions of such hinges. This first form reduces the stepped configuration of prior art hinges, and therefore reduces the opportunity for shifting cargo to become interlocked with the door. The second form (111) is mounted on the door and track, and is designed to prevent shifting cargo from entering the space through which the door must pass as it its raised or lowered.

TL;DR: In this article, a track guiding guard for a crawler type vehicle which is mounted along the lower side of a track frame is disclosed, consisting of a pair of left and right guard members which rotatably support track rollers.
Abstract: A track guiding guard for a crawler type vehicle which is mounted along the lower side of a track frame is disclosed. The track guiding guard comprises a pair of left and right guard members which rotatably support track rollers. Each guard member has a slanted bottom surface which defines a limit angle of inclination between the same and the upper surfaces of track shoes that face the bottom surface, the angle diverging laterally outward. Each guard member further defines a predetermined gap between the inner side surface of the lower end thereof and the outer ends of track pins that face the inner side surface. The gap is so set that when the bottom surface of the guard member is seated on the upper surfaces of the track shoes, the inner side surface of the lower end of the guard member substantially comes into contact with the outer ends of the track pins. Thus, the inclination of the vehicle is stably supported by the seating of the bottom surface of the guard member on the upper surfaces of the track shoes and the contact between the inner surface of the lower end of the guard member and the outer ends of the track pins.
