TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the nature and ex tent of a major problem and quantified it, thereby enabling more rational assessments to be made, and suggested a solution to reduce the run-in period and the oil consumption of engines.
Abstract: Ways of reducing the run-in period and the oil consumption of engines are being investigated intensively. One possible solution is that of making the cylinder liners in such a way that the modification of local geometry during running-in is kept to a minimum. Current technology has developed a modified honing process which attempts to reproduce the run-in texture. However, there are serious problems in measuring these surfaces which is resulting in disputes between machine tool and car manufacturers. This paper analyses the nature and ex tent of a major problem and quantifies it, thereby enabling more rational assessments to be made. Recommendations are put forward for the future

TL;DR: In this article, a flowable, visco-elastic, rheopectic abrasive medium is used for abrasion of workpieces, where the abrasive particales are uniformly distributed throughout the matrix.
Abstract: The invention relates to honing, polishing, reducing, or otherwise abrading, in which improved means and methods are employed for abrasion of workpieces (10) in general, and at least selected internal portions (16) of workpieces (10) such as bores, passages, and cavities in particular. In general, the abrasion is accomplished by the use of a flowable abrasive medium (18), with particular embediments using a visco-elastic, rheopectic abrasive medium. The abrasive medium (18) is in the form of a plastic or semisolid matrix containing abrasive particales (120) distri buted substantially uniformly throughout the matrix. The matrix transports the particles (120) through or across selected portions of a workpiece (122) being reated in order to permit the abrasive particles (120) to remove upraised metal and to round or radius corners as it passes, or to otherwise uniformly remove or finish these portions. Uni form distribution and maximised abrasive effect of the particles (120) is obtained by use of the matrix which also provides a relatively firm backing for the abrasive when the medium is subjected to high pressure.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose to make the dressing of a grinding wheel attainable without interrupting grinding operation, by mixing particled hard abrasives such as silicon carbide system grains, glass beads, etc., periodically into a high pressure coolant solution, while reproducing a cutting edge by means of a liquid honing effect.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To make the dressing of a grinding wheel attainable without interrupting grinding operation, by mixing particled hard abrasives such as silicon carbide system grains, glass beads, etc., periodically into a high pressure coolant solution, while reproducing a cutting edge by means of a liquid honing effect. CONSTITUTION:During grinding a work 2, if loading on a grinding surface 1a of a grinding wheel 1 happens, an on-off valve 15 is opened and hard abrasives 17 inside a hopper 16 is mixed in a coolant solution in a feed pipe 11. So, a high pressure coolant solution inclusive of the particled hard abrasive 17 is jettingly sprayed to the grinding surface 1a through a nozzle 10 whereby a blunted cutting edge surface in grains is dressed by means of a liquid honing effect, thus it is reproduced into a sharp edge surface. When proper dressing takes place upon continuation of this coolant solution jetting operation for the specified time long, the on-off valve 15 is closed and grinding operation by ordinary coolant solution feed continues to do as usual. Thus, grinding efficiency and service life in the grinding wheel both are improvable.

TL;DR: In this article, a WC base pressed powder body is sintered to prepare a throw-away chip made of a base hard alloy having a softened layer with a thickness of 10-200mum throughout the total surface thereof.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To develop excellent cutting capacity over a long period of time, by forming a softened layer to the scoop-up surface of the base of a surface coated throw-away chip to reduce high temp. plastic deformation as well as to secure toughness. CONSTITUTION:A WC base pressed powder body is sintered to prepare a throw- away chip made of a WC base hard alloy having a softened layer with a thickness of 10-200mum throughout the total surface thereof. The surface part other than the scoop-up surface of this throw-away chip is removed by grinding and honing is applied to the ground part. In the next process, a hard layer comprising TiCN or the like is formed on the surface thereof by a chemical vapor deposition method or a physical vapor deposition method. Because this surface coated throw-away chip has the softening layer formed only to the scoop-up surface thereof, plastic deformation is hardly generated. Therefore, the recession or the initial abrasion of a blade chip are reduced and excellent cutting capacity is developed over a long period of time.

TL;DR: In this article, a reversible d.c. torque motor is used to advance the cone mechanism at three different speeds so as to effect expansion of the tool first at a rapid traverse rate, then at a slower coarse feed rate, and finally at a still slower fine feed rate.
Abstract: A reversible d.c. torque motor advances and retracts a cone mechanism for radially expanding and contracting the stones of a tool for honing a bore in a workpiece. The motor is adapted to advance the cone mechanism at three different speeds so as to effect expansion of the tool first at a rapid traverse rate, then at a slower coarse feed rate and then at a still slower fine feed rate. Pulses representative of changes in position of the cone mechanism are routed to and are counted by a reversible counter which causes the cone mechanism to retract to different starting positions as the stones of the tool wear and reduce the effective diameter of the tool.

TL;DR: An instrument for sharpening microtome knives and similar articles, having a honing mechanism and a deburring or stropping mechanism, arranged on a housing which encloses motors for driving the mechanisms.
Abstract: An instrument for sharpening microtome knives and similar articles, having a honing mechanism and a deburring or stropping mechanism, arranged on a housing which encloses motors for driving the mechanisms. The knife is honed against a stone, which is mounted on a reciprocating carriage that has a variable speed control, and the honed knife blade is then deburred or stropped using a pair of counter-rotating disks, one for each side of the knife blade. A vise securely holds the knife and positions it at the proper angle for optimum honing, and the vise is mounted in a track which allows the knife blade to be moved back and forth across the reciprocating hone for uniform honing. A shield guards against inadvertent contact with the dangerously sharp blades during the honing operation, and guards are used to prevent the vise from leaving the track.

TL;DR: In this paper, the surface of a work roll is adjusted to 0.2-2.4mumRa surface roughness and 10-80HRC/2.5mm.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the adhesive strength of the photoresist coated surface of a metallic plate to an original plate and to improve copying by finishing a work roll so as to have specific surface roughness and denseness in its surface by liquid honing, in finish rolling a metallic plate for shadow mask. CONSTITUTION:In a finish cold rolling or a temper rolling of a metallic plate for shadow mask, the surface of a work roll is finished by liquid honing so as to have 0.5-4.0mumRa surface roughness and 10-80HRC/2.5mm. denseness in its surface. In this case, the surface of metallic plate is adjusted to 0.2-2.4mumRa surface roughness and 10-80HRC/2.5mm. denseness in its surface. A photoresist is coated on the surface of a metallic plate prepared by said surface conditions, to overlap the metallic plate on a thick plate, and air existing between both plates is perfectly removed by evacuating the gap to bring the plate into tight contact with the original plate. Thus a copying is performed excellently.
