TL;DR: A two-phase rough-and-finishing process was proposed in this paper, which eliminates the need for subsequent brush-enhancing at another location by eliminating the angle of movement of the tools.
Abstract: A two honing process eliminates the need for subsequent brush honing at another location. The honing process which is accomplished with a single head uses rough honing stones or tools for the initial phase, and finishing tools of tightly compacted abrasive containing plastic monofilaments for the second phase. The phases may be contiguous, slightly spaced, or preferably overlap for up to about one-half of the rough honing phase. When the finishing honing tools are operating alone, the angle of movement of the tools is somewhat askew of the oil retaining ridges and grooves formed by the rough honing operation. With the process, the oil bearing surfaces have improvements in plateau finish and surface topography, avoid abrasive contamination caused by hard finishing tools, and obtain such improvements in a more economic manner.

TL;DR: In this paper, an elongated rectangular cup element or holder having a bottom interior surface, a bundle of closely packed relatively short discrete generally parallel discrete filaments secured in the holder, and a layer of instant gel adhesive securing all of the filaments at one end face of the bundle to the bottom interior of the holder is formed.
Abstract: A honing tool characterized in one form by an elongated rectangular cup element or holder having a bottom interior surface, a bundle of closely packed relatively short discrete generally parallel abrasive containing filaments secured in the holder, and a layer of instant gel adhesive securing all of the filaments at one end face of the bundle to the bottom interior surface of the holder. To make such a honing tool, a measured bundle of uniformly closely packed nonwoven, generally parallel discrete filaments is formed. A holder is supported and a measured amount of gel adhesive is placed in the bottom interior of the holder so that a layer of such adhesive completely covers the bottom of the interior of the holder. The bundle is then promptly driven into the holder so that all of the filaments at one end of the bundle are in contact with the adhesive prior to the curing of the adhesive. The adhesive is then cured. In another form a rectangular bundle of abrasive containing strips is formed, each having a slit or scored lateral edge. The plastic strips may be formed into bundles by ultrasonic welding through the unslit or unscored root portions of each strip. The bundle is driven into the holder to be secured by the gel adhesive in the same manner. In either form there is produced a rectangular or oblong honing tool which is provided with relatively short fingers closely packed not only within the holder but also at the working face. The improved tool has a somewhat soft or flexible working face as compared to a conventional honing stone or clad steel tool and will not contaminate the surface being honed. The tool provides an improved surface topography whether used as a finish hone or in a tertiary operation.

TL;DR: The procedure for fine machining workpiece surfaces is a honing procedure carried out in at least two steps as discussed by the authors, and intersecting grooves are produced according to a predetermined pattern by means of a radiation device, in particular of a laser, in order to obtain a lubricant reservoir for subsequent use of the workpiece.
Abstract: The procedure for fine machining workpiece surfaces is a honing procedure carried out in at least two steps. In one of the steps of the procedure, the surface (6), for example the wall of a bore, is finish-honed to the intended final size, in the course of which a very fine structure with a very small depth of the honing marks is produced so that a large portion of the surface acts in a load-bearing manner. In another step of the procedure, which can be carried out before or after the finish-honing, intersecting grooves (9) are produced according to a predetermined pattern by means of a radiation device, in particular of a laser, in order to obtain a lubricant reservoir for the subsequent use of the workpiece. Since no deformations occur at the edges of the grooves during this radiation treatment, the intersection points (10) also remain free of material particles so that optimum distribution of the lubricant results.

TL;DR: In this paper, a laser beam is applied to individual surface elements over brief time periods, so that only the scale cover of graphite segments is opened, without removal of material from the surface.
Abstract: The method concerns treatment of piston slide paths made, in particular, of cast iron. The surface (3) is finished by honing and is then subjected to treatment by means of a laser beam focussed onto it. The laser beam is applied to individual surface elements over brief time periods, so that only the scale cover of graphite segments is opened, without removal of material from the surface. Pref. a laser with a short wavelength is led over the surface with a motion similar to the honing motion. The beam is either point or line focussed onto the surface. The beam from a laser located outside the tool is brought to the tool via a light guide. The laser is modulated (in particular, switched on and off) to produce a required surface texture of the piston slide path. USE/ADVANTAGE - In the motor industry. Its use results in improved wear resistance, as well as in reduced oil and fuel consumption. Simpler (and hence cheaper) piston rings can be used.

TL;DR: A completely corrosion resistant, high strength cutting tool such as an orthodontic wire cutter includes a stainless steel body having a pair of corrosion resistant alloy steel bonding tips brazed thereto as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: A completely corrosion resistant, high strength cutting tool such as an orthodontic wire cutter includes a stainless steel body having a pair of corrosion resistant alloy steel bonding tips brazed thereto. The tips are brazed to the body using a nickel alloy brazing foil at a brazing temperature of approximately 1900 degrees F. After a rough grinding to appropriate shape, the entire tool is heat treated in a process that heats the tool to an austenitizing temperature for the cutting tips that is about 2050 degrees F. and substantially above the brazing temperature to achieve a tip hardness of 62-67 Rc. Thereafter finish grinding, buffing, polishing and honing of the cutting edges completes the manufacture of the cutting tool.

TL;DR: In this paper, a tool for roughing down the end zones of bores has been proposed, where the end of the bore is honed with short tool strokes, the honing stones used being very short compared with the depth and length of the tool.
Abstract: The honing tool proposed in designed for roughing down the end zones of bores. Prior art honing tools of this type are used to rough-hone blind-end bores near the bottom of the bore. Here the end of the bore is honed with short tool strokes, the honing stones used being very short compared with the depth of the bore and the length of the tool. In order, nevertheless, to brace the honing tool sufficiently in the bore (2) and thus ensure correct alignment of the tool, the honing tool proposed has guide bars (25) which extend over the outside of the honing stones (17). The tool can also be used to rough down the upper ends of bores whose upper boundary plane is inclined at an angle to the bore axis or which have unsymmetrical constrictions at the end.

TL;DR: In this article, the Mfr process for IC engine gives longer cylinder and ring life with reduced friction and emission of pollutants, and a greater engine efficiency is obtained by using a cone wedging system.
Abstract: The hone is traversed axially through the cylinder without significant rotation so that the honing marks produced on the surface are essentially parallel to the cylinder axis. It consists of abrasive coated segments (19) separated by small gaps (20) around the circumference. The segments, which are compliant and have slightly less curvature than the bore to be housed, can be expanded against the cylinder wall by a cone wedging system (17,18). The hone can be rotated through a small angle during axial traverse to cover the gaps (20) around the circumference, or it can be angularly indexed at the end of a traverse. Honing may initially be done conventionally and the rotational movement is switched off at the final stage. USE/ADVANTAGE - Mfr process for IC engine gives longer cylinder and ring life with reduced friction and emission of pollutants. Greater engine efficiency is obtained.
