TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a sociological framework for the analysis of the macro and micro determinants of those media-system dependencies, including structural dependencies between the media and other social systems, characteristics of the social environs, media system activity, interpersonal discourse networks, the sociostructural location of individuals.
Abstract: Prior theory and research that has demonstrated the consequences of individuals' media-system dependencies upon selective exposure and message effects has not, however, addressed the equally important question of the determinants of individuals' media-system dependencies. The aim of this article is to present a sociological framework for the analysis of the macro and micro determinants of those media-system dependencies. The configuration of determinants that constitute this framework includes structural dependencies between the media and other social systems, characteristics of the social environs, media-system activity, interpersonal discourse networks, the sociostructural location of individuals, and personal goals.

TL;DR: The authors argued that people develop different states of media consciousness based upon the order of acquisition of media grammars, and that particular media consciousness produces media gaps which separate people, and the effects of media literacy on ways people relate to the world and each other.
Abstract: This essay argues that the traditional concept of the “generation” as the signifier of separate human time relationships be replaced by the concept of human groups based on media relationships. It takes the position that today people are connected or separated more by media experience than by chronological years. This position is developed through an examination of how new media develop their own grammars, the way individuals acquire media literacy, and the effects of media literacy on ways people relate to the world and each other. It concludes that people develop different states of media consciousness based upon the order of acquisition of media grammars, and that particular media consciousness produce media gaps which separate people.

TL;DR: The purpose of this paper is to explain truth, norm, power, influence as communication media which operate in the social information world and to analyze the function of these media to the actor, using the framework of action theory.
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to explain truth, norm, power, influence as communication media which operate in the social information world. Firstly, I attempt to analyze the function of these media to the actor, using the framework of action theory. Secondly, I try to analyze the function of these media to social system, in relation to the evolution of social system and social information system.Consequently, the following things was concluded. That is; truth, norm, power, influence are communication media which solve the two problem about the social interaction and the social system's adaptation to the environment. And these communication media formed two kind of relation. Namely, the first relation is the undifferentiation/differentiation of the same type of media ((1) truth and norm, (2) power and influence), and the second relation is the interdependency of the different type of media (especially (1) truth and influence, (2) norm and power).
