TL;DR: It is concluded that anterolateral paddles are as effective as anteroposterior paddles for the elective cardioversion of atrial arrhythmias, and that there is no demonstrable advantage to using paddles that are larger than the standard size in either position.
Abstract: We compared the success rates and energy requirements of two electrode-paddle positions (anteroposterior vs. anterolateral) and different paddle sizes in the elective cardioversion of atrial arrhythmias. We prospectively studied 173 patients - 111 in atrial fibrillation and 62 in atrial flutter. The anterolateral paddles used were either two standard-size (8.5-cm diameter) paddles or one 13-cm diameter anterior paddle with one standard-size lateral paddle. The anteroposterior paddles used were either a standard-size or a 13-cm anterior paddle with 12-cm posterior paddle. Overall cardioversion success rates with either paddle position were similar (greater than 90 per cent). The larger paddles did not significantly reduce energy requirements for cardioversion of either arrhythmia. We conclude that anterolateral paddles are as effective as anteroposterior paddles for the elective cardioversion of atrial arrhythmias, and that there is no demonstrable advantage to using paddles that are larger than the standard size in either position.

TL;DR: In this paper, a vessel is constructed by mounting a plurality of pairs of convex lens-shaped paddles in an axial direction, and varying the shape and arrangement of the paddles so that the transfer efficiency decreases gradually with the advancement of the reaction mixture from a material inlet port 5 to a product discharge port 6.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To continuously polymerize trioxane stably and efficiently, by employing a continuously agitated reactor in which a plurality of pairs of paddles are provided in an axial direction and the reaction mixture is transferred in a specified manner. CONSTITUTION:A reactor is constructed by (A) providing shafts 1 and 1' in the centers of drums 2 and 2' which are arranged parallel so that they overlap partially with each other, (B) mounting on the shafts 1 and 1' in the longitudinal direction, a plurality of pairs of convex lens-shaped paddles 4 and 4' (these paddles are synchronized so that they rotate while maintaining a slight clearance between a tip of one paddle and the side of another paddle and a clearance between a tip of one paddle and the inner wall of the drum 2) and (C) varying the shape and arrangement of the paddles, so that the transfer efficiency of the reaction mixture decreases gradually with the advancement of the reaction mixture from a material inlet port 5 to a product discharge port 6. The clearance between the tip of a paddle 4 or 4' and the drum 2 is preferably below about 2% of the diameter of the external circle of the paddle, and the clearance between the tip of one paddle and the side of another paddle is preferably below about 5 times the above clearance.

TL;DR: In this article, the level of flowable material in a storage bin comprising a motor rotatably suspended by a spring within a protective enclosure and a drive shaft coupled by a ball-and-detent clutch to a paddle disposed within the bin to engage material therein is indicated.
Abstract: Apparatus for indicating the level of flowable material in a storage bin comprising a motor rotatably suspended by a spring within a protective enclosure and a drive shaft coupled by a ball-and-detent clutch to a paddle disposed within the bin to engage material therein. When the material reaches the level of the paddle, the drag on the paddle causes the motor to rotate within the enclosure and thereby to activate a switch disposed within the enclosure and coupled to the motor. A spring returns the motor to the switch-deactivated position when the material level decreases and the consequent drag is removed from the paddle. Electronic circuitry disposed within the housing includes field-selectable fail-safe circuitry for indicating either a high or a low material condition in the event of a power failure or the like independently of actual material level.

TL;DR: A self-restoring torque-limiting torque-transmitting linkage for the rudder arm and rudder which drive the pin-moving paddle of an automatic pin setting machine for a lane of a bowling alley, will yield to permit that paddle to be moved if it is engaged by a bowling ball which is exiting from the area at the rear of that lane as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: A self-restoring torque-limiting torque-transmitting linkage, for the rudder arm and rudder which drive the pin-moving paddle of an automatic pin setting machine for a lane of a bowling alley, will yield to permit that paddle to be moved if it is engaged by a bowling ball which is exiting from the area at the rear of that lane. That linkage has a first rotatable member and a second rotatable member which normally are held for conjoint rotation by a spring. The first rotatable member is rotated by an eccentric pin on a pulley of the automatic pin setting machine, the second rotatable member is secured to the rudder arm of that automatic pin setting machine to effect rotation of that rudder arm, and the spring normally forces the second rotatable member, and hence the rudder arm and rudder and paddle, to rotate with the first rotatable member. If a bowling ball applies a predetermined force to the paddle, the spring will permit that paddle, the rudder, the rudder arm and the second rotatable member to move independently of the rotation of that first rotatable member. After that force disappears, the spring will again force the second rotatable member, and hence the rudder arm and rudder and paddle, to rotate with the first rotatable member.

TL;DR: In this article, the material left unburned in those burned is mixed with the heat medium 2 and carried out to a discharging tube 16 with the rotation of a paddle feeder shaft 6.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To treat material to be burned at a low cost with a high efficiency through a promoted agitation to be mixed with a heat medium by recrushing the material left crushed insufficiently in the pretreatment process with the rotation of a paddle feeder. CONSTITUTION:When remaining too large down at the bottom of a spiral fluidized bed due to insufficient crushing, some of the material to be burned dumped from a charging inlet is stirred to be mixed with a heat medium 2 being recrushed through a clearance of a paddle 5 and a paddle feeder trough 3. Then, it is evenly mixed with a heated pressure air being injected from an orifice nozzle 4 and returned into the upper portion of the spiral fluidized bed for complete combustion. Material left unburned in those burned is mixed with the heat medium 2 and carried out to a discharging tube 16 with the rotation of a paddle feeder shaft 6. At the same time, the heat medium 2 is separated from the material unburned and conveyed to a separator from a heat medium discharging tube 18 and then returned into a furnace body 1 through a heat medium return tube 19.

TL;DR: In this paper, a vertical vane is attached by a flexible strip to an element fixed to a hollow shaft, which rotates the shaft which drives the rotor in a stator of an angular position sensor.
Abstract: A vertical vane is attached by a flexible strip to an element fixed to a hollow shaft. The vane rotates the shaft which drives the rotor in a stator of an angular position sensor. The flexible strip is supported by a ball on the cap on a solid shaft inside the hollow shaft in which it moves longitudinally. It is supported at the other end by a flexible spring. This enables the force exerted by the wind on an oblique surface to move a magnetic paddle. This transmits the measurement through a stator of an inductive linear displacement sensor. The detector is enclosed in a case with a fixing flange enabling it to be mounted on an aircraft. The sensor outputs giving wind speed and direction are transmitted to a computer with data from sensors on the undercarriage to permit precise calculation of weight and c. of g.
