TL;DR: The authors' results suggest that common clinically used defibrillation paddle positions have a safety margin as large as 2.5 for current and /spl sim/6 for energy.
Abstract: A detailed 3-D finite element model of the conductive anatomy of the human thorax has been constructed to quantitatively assess the current density distribution produced in the heart and thorax during transthoracic defibrillation. The model is based on a series of cross-sectional CT scans and incorporates isotropic conductivities for eight tissues and an approximation of the anisotropic conductivity of skeletal muscle. Current density distributions were determined and compared for four paddle pairs and two paddle sizes. The authors' results show that the myocardial current density distributions resulting from a defibrillation shock were fairly uniform for the paddle pairs and sizes examined in this study. Specific details of the spatial distribution of the current density magnitudes in the heart were found to depend on paddle placement and size. When the minimum current necessary to defibrillate was delivered, the maximum myocardial current density produced with any of the paddle sizes and positions examined was less than four times the minimum current density necessary to render a myocyte in a fibrillating heart inexcitable, and less than 40% of the damage threshold. These results suggest that common clinically used defibrillation paddle positions have a safety margin as large as 2.5 for current and /spl sim/6 for energy. >

TL;DR: In this paper, a stirrer for mixing ingredients in a pot is described, where the stirrer includes a housing enclosing a battery-operated motor driving a downwardly depending drive shaft to which a stir paddle is detachably connected via an offset link.
Abstract: A stirrer is disclosed herein for mixing ingredients in a pot wherein the stirrer includes a housing enclosing a battery-operated motor driving a downwardly depending drive shaft to which a stir paddle is detachably connected via an offset link so that the paddle revolves about the central axis of the housing but offset therefrom. A releasable mounting arrangement attaches the housing to the rim of the pot so that the drive shaft is centered thereon allowing the paddle to revolve without striking the wall of the pot. The mounting arrangement includes self-adjusting, spring-bias arms having end clamps detachably coupled with the pot rim. Push button and dial controls with circuit networks carried on the housing selectively control time, speed and other operating parameters.

TL;DR: In this article, the shape of the paddle perimeter is made nonlinear to increase the surface area of its edge, and the inner ends of the leads are placed in close proximity to the paddles perimeter and are shaped to substantially follow its serpentine shape.
Abstract: A leadframe that exhibits improved thermal dissipation and that can be incorporated into standard integrated circuit (IC) packages is provided by increasing the thermal cross-section between the leadframe paddle and the lead fingers (leads) so that the leads are utilized for conducting a significant amount of heat away from the IC. A larger thermal cross-section can be achieved by making the shape of the paddle perimeter nonlinear to increase the surface area of its edge. In the preferred embodiment, the paddle perimeter has a "serpentine" shape and the inner ends of the leads are placed in close proximity to the paddle perimeter and are shaped to substantially follow its serpentine shape. The shaped paddle and lead ends increase the thermal cross-section between the paddle and the leads, resulting in improved thermal conduction. The leads conduct the heat to the outside of the package, where it is dissipated into the circuit board on which the leadframe package is mounted. For a package with a large number of leads, the paddle perimeter preferably has a saw-tooth shape, with at least some of the leads positioned between adjacent teeth.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe an exercise machine which is operated in a manner similar to paddling a kayak or other water craft with a double blade paddle, where the operator manipulates the handle bar in a pattern similar to that of paddling the kayak.
Abstract: This invention describes an exercise machine which is operated in a manner similar to paddling a Kayak or other water craft with a double blade paddle. The device incorporates a "T" bar shaped handle assembly centrally positioned in front of a seated operator and connected at its base with an articulating joint to a torque resisting mechanism. The articulating joint allows the operator to manipulates the handle bar in a pattern similar to that of paddling a Kayak as this configuration allows the handle bar to pivot and be positioned from side to side with a similar freedom of movement experienced with a Kayak type double blade paddle. Only the rotational component of the handle bar movement induced by paddle stroke motions are transmitted through the articulating joint and resisted by the torque resistance mechanism. The torque resistance mechanism utilizes a mechanical configuration where the alternating and reversing rotations of the handle bar movement are transformed into a unidirectional rotation of a flywheel where the combination of rotational inertia and an adjustable drag device provide an dynamic exercise resistance which is similar to that which is actually experienced while propelling a Kayak.

TL;DR: In this article, a first conveyor has a rotatable central portion with a number of paddles extending generally radially outward from the central portion, each paddle has first and second curved surfaces which engage the linerless labels for stacking.
Abstract: A linerless label stacking assembly and procedure utilize a paddle wheel first conveyor having a rotatable central portion with a number of paddles extending generally radially outward from the central portion. The central portion is along a generally horizontal axis and is rotated about that axis at spaced time intervals in a first direction. Each paddle has first and second curved surfaces which engage the linerless labels for stacking. A second conveyor having a generally horizontal supporting surface is disposed at approximately the same vertical position as the first conveyor axis, and a rotary cut off device, or a similar individual label cutter, feeds linerless labels to the first conveyor one at a time. After a stack of predetermined size is formed on a paddle, a controller (which receives input from a sensor associated with the rotary cut off) controls motors to rotate the first conveyor and operate the second conveyor to advance a stack of labels away from the cut off device.

TL;DR: A fastener for tying together a pair of shoelace eyelets on a shoe upper in such a way as to maintain the appropriate spacing there between while the shoe upper is being lasted is described in this paper.
Abstract: A fastener for tying together a pair of shoelace eyelets on a shoe upper in such a way as to maintain the appropriate spacing therebetween while the shoe upper is being lasted. In one embodiment, the fastener is a unitary plastic member shaped to include an elongated flexible filament having a cross-bar at one end and a paddle at the opposite end, the paddle being provided with two or more alternative openings through which the cross-bar may be inserted to form a loop. The openings are preferably disposed at different points along the length of the paddle so that the different sized loops may be used for different eyelet spacings. In another embodiment, a feed bar is severably connected to the fastener for use in positioning the paddle so that the cross-bar may be aligned with and easily inserted into a desired cross-bar opening. Alternatively, the paddle may be provided with registration means. To attach the fastener to a pair of eyelets of a shoe upper, the paddle is positioned so that a desired opening is aligned with one of the eyelets. The filament is then drawn over the upper to the other eyelet, and the cross-bar is inserted first through the pair of eyelets and then through the desired opening in the paddle.

TL;DR: In this article, an end effector carriage moving on a track and supporting an end-effector having spaced, parallel pads to engage opposed outer side portions of a wafer boat was used for automatic loading of wafer boats onto a cantilever paddle.
Abstract: A system for automatic loading of wafer boats onto a cantilever paddle for insertion of the wafer boats into a furnace tube includes an end effector carriage moving on a track and supporting an end effector having spaced, parallel pads to engage opposed outer side portions of a wafer boat. The end effector receives a wafer boat from a robotic arm of an elevator. The robotic arm moves transversely relative to the track to position the wafer boat over the track on which the paddle carriage moves. The end effector carriage moves the end effector pads under the wafer boat, lifts it from a pair of elevator tines, moves the wafer boat over a desired part of the paddle, and lowers the wafer boat onto the paddle. The end effector carriage then returns the end effector to an initial location. The elevator and end effector main the wafer boat at a slight tilt as it is shifted from a wafer boat queue to the cantilever paddle so as to prevent rattling of wafers held in slots of the wafer boat due to vibration of the system.
