TL;DR: In this article, a hydraulic tensioning device for maintaining a predetermined amount of tensioning force on an endless drive belt of a vehicle accessories drive system is presented, where a lever extends outwardly from the housing and is integrally connected to the shaft for pivotal movement upon rotation of the shaft.
Abstract: A hydraulic tensioning device for maintaining a predetermined amount of tensioning force on an endless drive belt of a vehicle accessories drive system. A housing is mounted in a fixed position on the engine in close proximity to the drive belt. A shaft is movably mounted within the housing by an elastomer block which biases the shaft in a belt tensioning rotational direction. A lever extends outwardly from the housing and is integrally connected to the shaft for pivotal movement upon rotation of the shaft. An expandable bladder or actuator is mounted in the housing and is engageable with the shaft and pivots the rotor and lever toward a belt tensioning direction when the bladder is expanded by hydraulic fluid. A hydraulic fluid supply and pump assembly supplies fluid under pressure to inflate the bladder. An idler pulley drivingly engages the fluid pump and is driven by the endless drive belt for actuating the pump. The elastomer block applies a pretensioning force on the drive belt with the hydraulically inflatable bladder supplying the major portion of the tensioning force when the vehicle engine is running. In one form of the invention, the fluid supply and pump assembly is mounted in the housing and the lever either moves a pivotally mounted vehicle accessory or moves an idler pulley into belt engagement to tension the belt. In another embodiment, the fluid supply and pump assembly is mounted on the extended end of the lever in engagement with an idler pulley which both tensions the belt and drives the fluid pump with the elastomer block, bladder and shaft being mounted in a fixed position on the engine.

TL;DR: In this article, a tensioning device for maintaining a predetermined amount of tensioning force on an endless drive belt for a vehicle accessories drive system is presented, where a lever is pivotally mounted on a shaft which is located within a housing and extends generally radially outwardly from the housing and is adapted to move in a belt tensioning direction.
Abstract: A tensioning device for maintaining a predetermined amount of tensioning force on an endless drive belt for a vehicle accessories drive system. A housing is mounted in a fixed position on the vehicle engine adjacent the drive belt. A lever is pivotally mounted on a shaft which is located within the housing and extends generally radially outwardly from the housing and is adapted to move in a belt tensioning direction. A first pair of cylindrical, torsional coil springs is telescopically mounted on the shaft, with the springs being located one on each side of the lever. A second pair of cylindrical, torsional coil springs is telescopically concentrically mounted on the shaft and surrounds the first spring pair. One end of each spring is attached to the housing with the other spring ends being attached to the lever. The spring pairs are placed in torsion and bias the lever in the belt tensioning direction. An idler pulley is mounted on the end of the lever and is moved into tensioning engagement with the drive belt by the torsion springs, or alternately one of the vehicle accessories is mounted on the end of the lever for tensioning the drive belt which is engaged by the accessory pulley. The tensioner construction enables a large tensioning force to be obtained from a relatively small, compact, simple spring arrangement by using three or more torsional springs.

Abstract: An improved solid state thermal engine utilizes as a drive member a braided belt fabricated from a memory alloy such as nickel-titanium and nickel-titanium ternary alloys, copper-zinc and copper-zinc ternary alloys, and the like. The braided belt is mounted on a set of pulleys to provide passage through a hot zone where the belt contracts and develops tension, and through a cold zone where it relaxes and stretches. Since more energy is delivered by contraction than is required for relaxation, positive work output results with an efficiency of between one-fifth and one-third of the Carnot cycle.

TL;DR: In this article, a pair of gears, which form a gear set, are tested by mounting the gears on parallel axis spindles which are located at a fixed center distance, and an accelerometer, which is coupled to a conventional electronic output indicator, is mounted on the resiliently mounted spindle to provide indications of the vibrations caused by the gear sets.
Abstract: A pair of gears, which form a gear set, are tested by mounting the gears on parallel axis spindles which are located at a fixed center distance. One of the parallel axis spindles is contained in a spindle housing that is rigidly mounted to a massive base. The other gear of the set is contained in a spindle housing which is supported on top of a pair of parallel leaf springs that are connected to the base. The spindle in the spindle housing that is rigidly mounted on the base carries a pulley at its end that is remote from the gear set which is coupled through a drive belt and a second pulley to a drive motor. The spindle in the resiliently mounted spindle housing on the leaf springs is coupled to an eddy current brake at its end which is remote from the gear set. An accelerometer, which is coupled to a conventional electronic output indicator, is mounted on the resiliently mounted spindle to provide indications of the vibrations caused by the gear sets. The gears of the gear set are driven by the drive motor so that their tooth-to-tooth frequency is approximately the same as the resonant frequency of the resiliently mounted spindle housing. The construction of the testing system in the described manner substantially improves the signal-to-noise ratio of the output signal that is obtained from the accelerometer.

TL;DR: In this paper, the first and second free ends (male and female respectively) are connected together by longitudinally interlocking a plurality of laterally disposed, inclined teeth located near the male end with lateral rows of inclined grooves located in an interlock passage in the female end.
Abstract: A V-belt for coupling at least two pulleys together, the pulleys having a substantially V-shaped groove, the belt being manually installable without moving or adjusting the distance between the pulleys. The particular usage of the present invention is for temporary (emergency) or permanent installation of a "fan" belt found on (but not limited to) conventional vehicles of the V-belt type. The device allows anyone, upon the destruction of a fan belt, to readily and quickly install a temporary pulley belt manually, without tools. For a permanent installation, a small implement may be used with the present device for increased tensioning of the belt in its proper position. The improved belt includes first and second free ends (male and female respectively that are firmly connected together by longitudinally interlocking a plurality of laterally disposed, inclined teeth located near the male end with lateral rows of inclined grooves located in an interlock passage in the female end. During installation, once the belt is positioned around the pulleys, the male end is inserted into the interlock passage. The male end is tapered for a short length in thickness for easy insertion (expanding away from the end point) to let a length of excess belt through the female end where the tightening device may be used. Beyond the tapered segment, the belt (male end) remains the same thickness to the female end. The interlocking force increases as a function of the length of the male end received through the interlock passage because of the increasing thickness of the male end.
