TL;DR: The authors examined the factors which influence early childhood and care (ECEC) early career teachers' confidence in teaching religious education and how it impacts their teaching of RE in Catholic primary schools in Western Australia.
Abstract: This article reports findings from a study that examines the factors which influence early childhood and care (ECEC) early career teachers’ confidence in teaching Religious Education (RE) and how it impacts their teaching of RE in Catholic primary schools in Western Australia. Teachers’ confidence is a teacher’s belief in their ability to accomplish a goal and refers to strength of belief. Research in this area has shown that confidence is correlated with the sense of teaching efficacy and responsibility for student learning. Whilst there has been some research into teacher confidence, there has been insufficient research into early childhood teachers’ confidence to teach RE in Catholic schools in an Australian context. Literature supports the notion that if early childhood teachers have a strong teacher confidence for a subject, they are more motivated to teach the subject and this has a positive correlation with positive student outcomes. The epistemological approach underpinning the research is constructivist in nature; therefore, it is based on understanding the constructed realities of what humans know of the world and themselves as produced by communications and systems of meaning. Three case studies follow teachers from their early career to second-year experience in Catholic schools. This study investigates support structures and aspects that contribute to teacher confidence in the teaching of RE. The main themes identified by the data that contributed to confidence or lack of confidence included training, family and religious backgrounds, teaching and learning, mentoring and support in the first year of teaching. The implications of the results for pre-service teacher training and support for graduate teachers are discussed and some suggestions are offered about the courses provided by universities and what schools and education systems can do to support early career teachers to teach RE effectively in Catholic schools.

Abstract: Abstract That childhood is important in and of itself is a key ideal that should shape religious education and childhood religious formation more broadly. However, the neoliberal values of western society have influenced religious education, such that we tend to focus on who the child is becoming in terms of a future potential, instead of who the child is now. This essay questions this practice, calling on religious educators to honor children’s being and their ontological spirituality.

TL;DR: In this article , the situation of religious minorities in a Christian dominated sociopolitical environment in Lithuania through the confessional religious education (RE) system is analyzed, and the authors reveal that although tolerance of other religions is mentioned, there is also a visible hegemony of the Roman Catholic Church, and of Christianity in general.
Abstract: This article analyzes the situation of religious minorities in a Christian dominated sociopolitical environment in Lithuania through the confessional religious education (RE) system. Representation of religious minorities based on confessional model thus raises questions on majority and minority religions’ coexistence, whilst the latter neither legally, nor normatively experience such linkage with the State as majorified religion does. The empirical part of the study, based on content analysis of curricula and teaching aids, reveals that although tolerance of other religions is mentioned, there is also a visible hegemony of the Roman Catholic Church, and of Christianity in general. Non-traditional religious communities that are not recognized by the state are considered as belonging to the new religious movements, which are often associated with the words “dangerous,” “destructive,” etc. Thus, the study reveals legislation shortcomings of RE, dominance of the majority religion, Christian and Catholic normativity both within society as well as the curriculum and teaching aids, and close Church-State relations.

TL;DR: In this article , the authors focus on the provision of early years' religious education in primary schools and pre-schools in the Republic of Ireland and the impact on early childhood religious education of this diminution.
Abstract: Ireland’s education system at primary level is renowned for its lack of diversity, with most schools falling under the patronage of the Catholic Church. This homogeneity of school type is problematic from a number of perspectives, not least the changed demographics in terms of religious affiliation in Ireland. There is a desire for change by all; however, the pace of change is slow. Whilst the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) determines the curriculum for all subject areas in primary schools, this body has no remit over the subject of religious education (RE). The responsibility for the provision of RE has rested with the patrons of schools since the inception of the national school system. This review focuses on the provision of early years’ Catholic RE in schools and pre-schools in the Republic of Ireland. In recent years, the importance afforded to the subject of RE and its status in schools has been eroded. The impact on early childhood religious education of this diminution is outlined. The review also addresses the training and support of teachers to work in the Catholic school sector and concurs with other writers in the field that current programmes of preparation require reform.

TL;DR: Altmeyer and Kerbeck as mentioned in this paper explore religious education as a means for enabling learners to build life-relevant knowledge and critical understanding, and they argue that religious literacies are underpinned by an awareness of inter-religious views ranging from the neutral to critical and ultimately leading to positioning individual decisions and identities within religion-aware thinking.
Abstract: Stefan Altmeyer and Johannes Kerbeck explore religious education as a means for enabling learners to build life-relevant knowledge and critical understanding. They argue that religious literacies are underpinned by an awareness of inter-religious views ranging from the neutral to critical and ultimately leading to positioning individual decisions and identities within religion-aware thinking. Learners are guided along a pathway from understanding ‘religious language’ to actively engaging in religious dialogue and using the ‘language of religion’ in appropriate, critical and reflective ways. Investigating the differences between subjective and objective positionality involves learners in facing changing perspectives that build on developing basic religious knowledge, applying their understanding to lived experiences and constructing critical yet relevant evaluations of arguments and counter-arguments. When these evaluations demonstrate appropriate use of the ‘correlative’ or ‘dialogic’ principle of religious learning, students exhibit deeper understanding. The learning episode focuses on a national initiative on global development featuring a video-streamed inter-religious panel discussion with experts from different creeds. Drawing on issues of diversity, empathy, solidarity and responsibility and using digital media, learners are invited to prepare for, actively participate in and connect personally with issues through deep reflection informed by religious literacies development.
