Inertial systems and area navigation in the u.s. domestic airspace

Abstract: Inertial navigation systems are being adopted by air carriers for application on long-range oceanic routes and their existence in cockpits in increasing numbers warrants attention to their possible application during enroute and terminal, domestic operations. This paper discusses performance requirements for airborne area navigation systems as proposed in FAA Advisory Circular 90–45 and projects these performance requirements through 1995. The application of an INS with position updating from conventional ground referenced navigation aids to meet these present and forecasted performance requirements are assessed and the effects on pilot workload are discussed. Also included in this paper is a brief description of a planned flight evaluation to assess the effects of an integrated Inertial/DME-DME/Map Display area navigation system on aircraft navigation performance and pilot workload.
