THE POLYMER MAY BE SWELLED IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION TO PROVIDE A TRANSPARENT HYDROGEL HAVING EXCELLENT PHYSICAL PROPERTIES, AND SUITABLE IN AN OPHTHALMIC LENS.

Abstract: THIS INVENTION IS FOR POROUS HYDROGELS OF PARTLY HYDROLYZED POLYACRYLONITRILE WHICH ARE USEFUL AS SORBENTS AND WHICH ARE MADE BY DISSOLVING OR SWELLING POLYACRYLONITRILE IN CONCENTRATED NITRIC ACID AT TEMPERATURES UNDER 50*C. UNTIL THE DEGREE OF HYDROLYSIS DESIRED IS ATTAINED. THE TEMPERATURE IS THEN INCREASED TO 50*C TO 85*C. UNTIL THE POLYMER IS FOAMED. THE ACID IS THEN REMOVED FROM THE POLYMER BY WASHING. POROPH9ORS MAY BE ADDED TO THE POLYMER ACID MIXTURE PRIOR TO THE FINAL HEATING PHASE.

Abstract: STRONG, ELASTIC HYDROGELS ARE MADE BY COPOLYMERIZING ACRYLONTRILE OR METHACRYLONITRILE OR MIXTURES THEREOF WITH CO-MONOMERS HAVING HYDROPHILIC SIDE-GROUPS, SUCH AS ACRYLAMIDE, METHACRYLAMIDE, ACRYLIC ACID, METHACRYLIC ACID AND VINYL PYRROLIDONE OR WITH MIXTURES OF SUCH CO-MONOMERS. THE COPOLYMERIZATION IS CARRIED OUT IN PRESECE OF FREE RADICALS AND IN AN INORGANIC SOLVENT WHICH DOES NOT UNDERGO ANY SUBSTANTIAL CHAIN TRANSFER SUCH AS CONCENTERED AQUEOUS ZINC CHLORIDE SOLUTION OR NITRIC ACID.

Abstract: Hydrophilic polymer networks (hydrogels) are potentially useful scleral buckling materials for retinal detachment surgery. The swelling characteristics of three hydrogels in free solution and within a confined tissue space in vivo are described. The compressibility (compliance) of PGMA [poly (glyceryl methacrylate)] 12:1, PGMA 5:1, and PHEMA [poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)] at various levels of hydration and the clinical effects and biologic tolerance of scleral bucklings obtained with hydrogels were studied.
