TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a theoretical analysis of the theoretical difficulties with conventional regional economic impact assessment (REIA) and social impact assessment, and the justification for including secondary project impacts in assessing a project's worth.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the difficulties in implementing SIA in China under three broad areas: SIA and the planning process; its value assumptions; and its interdisciplinary characteristics, and further illustrate two case studies: the international airport plan in Shenzhen Special Economic Zone in southern China, and the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangzi River in central China.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluate the structural interaction between Third World development, agro-biotechnological change, and past problems from earlier introduction of agricultural technology into Third World countries.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Social impact assessment (SIA) can clarify, rather than confound, issues of importance in development processes, because of the essentially pragmatic orientation of SIA, and SIA's extension into social policy is touched upon briefly.

TL;DR: In this paper, a small town in South-Western Queensland is used as a case study over a five-year period and key issues are identified which can assist small towns to help themselves revitalise.
Abstract: Generally, Australians consider that small towns are declining and there is not much that can be done about it. This paper argues that only certain sorts of towns (largely inland) are declining and that a lot can be done about it, provided there is the will. A small town in South-Western Queensland is used as a case study over a five year period and key issues are identified which can assist small towns to help themselves revitalise.

TL;DR: This paper is designed to offer an introduction and update on trends in social impact assessment (SLA) research, with special reference to Canada and the USA where research for indigenous people has led the theoretical development of SLA.
Abstract: As Tatz observed in relation to the Social Impact of Uranium Mining study (AIAS 1984,12) it is difficult for those embarking on social impact research to find literature and precedents to guide their work. This paper is designed to offer an introduction and update on trends in social impact assessment (SLA) research, with special reference to Canada and the USA where research for indigenous people has led the theoretical development of SLA. It also gives an overview of research on impacts of resource development on Aboriginal people and suggests priorities for improving Aboriginal SLA research.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present findings from a social assessment of siting a low-level radioactive waste storage facility in Michigan, focusing specifically on how people perceive themselves to be affected by the proposed facility and the degree of community support for and opposition to the facility.
Abstract: This report presents findings from a social assessment of siting a low level radioactive waste storage facility in Michigan. The research focused specifically on how people perceive themselves to be affected by the proposed facility and the degree of community support for and opposition to the facility. Social assessment research in the LLRW project consisted of a telephone survey of Michigan residents and an in-depth ethnographic survey of residents in the tri-state area of Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. Findings from these studies can aid in the development and implementation of a social monitoring program and in the design of community-based measures to mitigate unwanted social impacts.

Journal Article
TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented the findings of one approach used to project anticipated risk-induced effects, specifically the impacts on residents' social well-bing and anticipated behavioral adjustments, based on responses to four alternative plausible 'risk futures.'
Abstract: The proposed siting of a high-level nuclear waste repository in the State of Nevada has raised difficult problems with respect to assessing future social impacts. The projection of impacts due to a repository has two special problems for the impact assessment process. This paper provides the rationale and describes the findings of one approach used to project anticipated risk-induced effects, specifically the impacts on residents' social well-bing and anticipated behavioral adjustments. The paper shows the findings of a random, representative sample of 755 residents in the Las Vegas area. The findings are based on responses to four alternative plausible 'risk futures.'
