Abstract: A Task Group of the Joint Committee on Effect of Temperature on the Properties of Metals (sponsored by the American Society for Testing and Materials, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Metal Properties Council) did an extensive study of methods for the extrapolation of short-time rupture data in an effort to decide if any one method might serve as a basis for a standard practice. Emphasis was on the time-temperature parameter. The following conclusions were reached: 1. Among the computerized techniques the newly introduced minimum-commitment method (MCM) is on the average about as good as the best of the four standard time-temperature parameters studied. 2. In addition, the MCM has other potential merits which make it a candidate for the sought-after standard. Further study and investigative work are required to realize this potential. 3. Experienced analysts can get good results by manual extrapolation methods. These methods are subjective, and because of the limited availability of experienced analysts such methods probably should not be considered for standard practice. Many recommendations are given in the report for future work toward the goal of defining a standard practice.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors trace the evolution of standards for alternating current high voltage circuit breakers in the United States from approximately 1900 through 1972, and outline some of the new areas of circuit breaker standardization now being developed in industry committees.
Abstract: This paper traces the evolution of standards for alternating current high voltage circuit breakers in the United States from approximately 1900 through 1972. It reviews differences in rating principles and application methods in the "total current" and "symmetrical current" basis of rating standards and outlines some of the new areas of circuit breaker standardization now being developed in industry committees.

Abstract: Since CAI was introduced, the course author has been faced with a new problem Not only must he have a thorough knowledge of the subject content and the student objectives for the course but he must also learn an instructional programming language This paper discusses the various types of easy author entry systems that have been developed, describing the salient features of particular systems, and suggests where each type might be used It also describes a prototype system whose design aims have concentrated particularly on the problems of ease of use, documentation and standardization

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used multiblade shear and shear-compression cells to test cooked spaghetti and found that the apparent differences in readings between two cells depend on the spaghetti used.
Abstract: There are inherent difficulties in standardizing texture test instruments because test cell performance must be evaluated. Using multiblade shear and shear-compression cells to test cooked spaghetti showed that the apparent differences in readings between two cells depend on the spaghetti used. This cannot be explained by the dimensional differences between the cells. Interchangeability of extrusion type cells can be evaluated with foods within the limits imposed by variability of the test samples. The apparent differences, however, depend on the food used. The standardization and interchangeability of texture test cells cannot be based only on the accuracy with which force, deformation and time are recorded. Test cell performance must also be evaluated, and to date, a satisfactory test material is not available. Only empirical comparisons can be made between instruments, but to be reliable these must be thoroughly investigated to determine the sources of the differences.

Abstract: 577 infection from the bowel operation. I have not used any preoperative preparation of the bowel for the past 12 years and I have had no cause to regret it. I would like to inquire whether there are any other surgeons who do not inflict preoperative therapy upon their had a letter from a house physician which finished: \"she was T.T.O.'ed on....* May I make a plea to stop the use of these ghastly abbreviations, which are meaningless outside the hospitals concerned?-I am, etc., submucous diathermy to inferior tur-binates; T.T.O.=to take out. Multiple Sclerosis and Malignant Gliomas SIR,-The association of malignant gliomas with multiple sclerosis is exceptional. Such instances have been reported by Munch-Petersen,' Brihaye et al.,2 and Russell Rubin-stein.' I am currently studying post-mortem material from a 44-year-old woman who had suffered from multiple sclerosis for 17 years and who died from a massive intracerebral glioblastoma. Preliminary examination confirms the clinical diagnosis of multiple sclerosis and numerous old plaques can be seen throughout the brain and spinal cord. Several of the intracerebral plaques contain tumour, and it is interesting to note that where this has occurred the outlines of the original plaques are preserved. No peri-vascular cellular infiltrates can be seen either in relation to the plaques or to the tumour. In only two of the four previously recorded cases has a topographical relationship been established between the zones of de-myelination and tumour, and though the association may be purely fortuitous it is nevertheless intriguing and thought provok

TL;DR: In this article, the authors consider the problems of standardizing only one of these areas -the control room, and propose solutions to the implementation question by establishing licensing priorities, to limit supplier design options and to establish standards through engineering societies.
Abstract: The key to expeditious design, construction and licensing of today's Nuclear Power Plant is standardization - standardization of site arrangement, building arrangement, control room layout, system design and construction. This paper considers the problems of standardizing only one of these areas - the control room. The obvious questions asked are: . Can the room arrangement be standardized? * Will incorporation of design improvements be significantly restricted? * How can standardization be implemented? A review of the factors that affect the room arrangement, such as building dimensional constraints, operational requirements and economics, indicates that a standard arrangement can be achieved. Improvements can also be incorporated, after sufficient evaluation, through the release of a new updated standard. And finally, some solutions to the implementation question may be to establish licensing priorities, to limit supplier design options and to establish standards through engineering societies. The mounting energy crisis is forcing decisions in many areas and the obvious advantages of standardization will become even more evident in the immediate future.
