Abstract: The recent Eurasian collared-dove (Streptopelia decaocto, hereafter collared-dove) invasion of North America has raised concerns regarding its effects on native species, particularly mourning doves (Zenaida macroura). Our goal was to assess the potential for, and possible consequences of, foraging competition between mourning doves and collared-doves. We compared diet selection and measured degree of dietary overlap between the 2 dove species in a captive cafeteria experiment, and we measured aggression and competitive ability of these species in 3 captive competition experiments. We evaluated the effects of body size, temperature, and food distribution on aggression and competitive ability of both species, and we measured intraspecific aggression levels and competitive ability within each species. Abstract: As part of ongoing studies on the blood profiles of the Nigerian avian species, haematological and plasma biochemical parameters were determined in the Nigerian laughing dove (Streptopelia senegalensis). There were no significant sex differences in all the parameters studied. However, when the values that were observed in the Nigerian laughing dove were compared with those of the Nigerian duck (Anas platyrhynchos), the Nigerian duck had significantly higher mean corpuscular volume, total white blood counts, plasma urea, total protein and globulin, but significantly lower red blood cell counts, haemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, plasma potassium and albumin/globulin ratio than the Nigerian laughing dove. Abstract: I studied seed-size selection among Mourning Doves (Zenaida macroura) and Eurasian Collared-Doves (Streptopelia decaocto), two newly sympatric species for which mechanisms of seed selection are not well understood. I measured and compared mean length, breadth, and thickness of seeds available to, and consumed by, these species in feeding trials of penned birds. Both species selected corn (Zea mays) seeds that were shorter and narrower than average, but Eurasian Collared-Doves selected corn that was thicker than average and sunflower (Helianthus annuus) seeds that were broader and thicker than average. Mourning Doves consumed corn of average thickness, and wheat (Triticum aestivum) and sunflower seeds of average size with respect to all dimensions. Corn consumption by both species seems limited by seed length and breadth, but Mourning Dove consumption of smaller seed types (wheat and milo [Sorghum vulgare]) appears largely unaffected by seed size. Abstract: 近年, 農作業の省力化のために, 水稲の直播栽培が各地で行われているが, 播種期の鳥害が問題となっている. 入水前の田にモミを播く乾田直播ではキジバトStreptopelia orientalisが播種後に集団でモミを採餌するために, 地域によっては大きな被害を出している. そこで本研究では野外大網室内の実験水田において, 大麦を用いた代替餌場を設置することにより, キジバトの水稲への被害を軽減できるかどうかを実験した. 実験は代替餌設置区と非設置区とを設け, キジバトの導入時期は前期 (播種直後から出芽揃い) と後期 (出芽揃い以降に前期と同じ期間) に分けた, 代替餌の有無と導入時期の組み合わせの2×2の4処理を1セットとし, 2000年5月1日から9月12日にかけて5セット繰り返した. 苗立ち数を処理区とキジバトが入れないようにしたエクスクロージャーとの間で比較したところ, 前期では代替餌設置区で有意差がなく, 代替餌非設置区で有意に少なかった. 一方, 後期の苗立ち数は代替餌のあるなしに関わらず, エクスクロージャーとの間に有意差はなく, 出芽揃い以降には被害が生じないことが示された. これらのことより被害の時期は播種から出芽揃いの時期であること, 代替餌の設置により被害が軽減されることが明らかとなった.

Abstract: From April 2005 to July 2005,we have anatomically observed ten species of raw birds in the campus of Longdong University and the suburbs of Xifeng county.Results showed that the birds have different kinds of beak and tongue according to their virtue of species,food,and the style of looking for foods.Digestive tract of Egretta alba is the longest of all,which is 2.59 times than the length of its body,those of Phasianus colchicus linnaeus,Alecoris chukar and Streptopelia orientalis are shorter than those of Egretta abla,which is 2.45 to 2.39 times than the length of its body.The digestive tract of Pycnonotus sinensis,Phoenicurus auroreus,Motacilla alba,,Parus major,Sturnus malabaricus and Lanius tephronotus are the shortest,which is 0.88 to 1.51 times than the length of its body.Phasianus colchicus Linnaeus and Alecoris chukar have a developed ingluvies,muscular stomach and cecum,but the rest less developed or disappeared.Through anatomical observation,we found that: Egretta abla was a kind of meat-eating bird,Streptopelia orientalis,Phasianus colchicus Linnaeus and Alectoris graeca were kinds of planteating birds,Pycnonotus sinensis was belongs to that of food-mixture birds,the rest were those of pest-eating birds.Results showed that: the structure character of intestine of birds has a great relationship with their food.
