Abstract: In recent years an increasing number of studies have been written concerning the problems of the developing regions of the world. A large number of such studies have concentrated on the economic development of the countries in these areas, although the concomitant process of urbanization is often included. The authors of these works have been particularly interested in establishing the relationship between the processes of economic development and urbanization; however, in doing so, they rarely examine the actual urban centers. When included, urban centers are usually accorded only peripheral consideration. This study is directed specifically to the examination of urhan centers in a developing economy. A multivariate analysis of urban attributes is employed to facilitate the identification of patterns of similarity and diversity among the centers. There has been very little research on urban systems in Africa; most authors have tended to consider only the urban-rural dichotomy or the influence and characteristics of a single center. This may be due in part to the generally early stage of urban research in non-Western countries, but perhaps more important, this neglect has stemmed from a general dearth of detailed and accurate urban data. In Ghana, as in many of the developing countries, the conditions for urban research are rapidly being improved.
