TL;DR: In this article, an analysis of the quantity and intensity of rural land consumed for urban development highlights certain regularities in the urban growth process as well as great variability in land conversion rates throughout the urban hierarchy.
Abstract: How do land conversion rates throughout the urban hierarchy respond to changes in economic, demographic, and physical factors? An analysis of the quantity and intensity of rural land consumed for urban development highlights certain regularities in the urban growth process as well as great variability. Population change, economic function, and soil capability show the greatest promise in explaning the provision of land for urban development. It is concluded that more systematic and sensitive measures of urban land-use requirements are needed before urban and rural land uses can be budgeted effectively.

TL;DR: In this paper, a resource-conserving urbanism approach can be an effective tool of analysis, it is not sufficient by itself to be the foundation for a given USAID urban program, while a program must take into account such matters as: (1) general conditions of political stability; (2) prospects for continued growth in international trade; (3) relationships of the national government with the United States; and (4) the funds available within United States for covering existing commitments.
Abstract: This study is important to the future policies of Western countries and Japan because of the rising overall of cities in the developing world is projected to match that of the developed within the span of a human generation. Although the experience reported for the cases has shown that a resource-conserving urbanism approach can be an effective tool of analysis, it is not sufficient by itself to be the foundation for a given USAID urban program. It addresses only conditions within a given urban region, while a program must take into account such matters as: (1) general conditions of political stability; (2) prospects for continued growth in international trade; (3) relationships of the national government with the United States; and (4) the funds available within the United States for covering existing commitments, and some local factors. The method is not even very sensitive to comparisons of cities for choosing the most suitable program locales because the accumulated information illuminates the uniqueness of each urban community. It will, however, generate most of the up-to-date information needed. (PSB)

TL;DR: The environment-behavior literature related to the urban environment is in many ways as complex and diverse as the city itself as mentioned in this paper, and the most recent work in this area has endeavored to apply and integrate environment behavior theory and research on such concepts as density, crowding and sensory overload with more traditional views of urban life.
Abstract: The environment-behavior literature related to the urban environment is in many ways as complex and diverse as the city itself. While traditionally the province of urban sociology, the urban crises of the past two decades have prompted considerable research into the nature and consequences of city life from a social psychological perspective as well. Some of the most recent work in this area has endeavored to apply and integrate environment- behavior theory and research on such concepts as density, crowding and sensory overload with more traditional views of urban life.
