Abstract: The criticisms that sociologists have voiced of Wirth's essay "Urbanism as a Way of Life" are examined. It is argued that the evidence on which these criticisms rely contains several inadequacies. To support Wirth's theory, data are presented showing a negative correlation between the size of the locality a person lives in and the intimacy of his friedship ties. The autor concludes that a fresh look at Wirth's theory is needed utilizing research based on adequate measures and adequate design.

TL;DR: The theme of death and transfiguration recurs as a leitmotiv throughout the long history of sociological speculations about the city as discussed by the authors, and ideologists have responded, each according to his values, to eulogize the lost or to rejoice.
Abstract: The theme of death and transfiguration recurs as a leit-motiv throughout the long history of sociological speculations about the city. Each time, so it seems, just as one particular manifestation of urbanism has approached its terminal stage, a theorist has hastened to equate its matured form with the essence of urbanism sui generie, and ideologists have responded, each according to his values, to eulogize the lost or to rejoice.

TL;DR: Faught as discussed by the authors investigates and defines the nature of the esthetic associated with historical styles in general, and examines in some detail the operation of an estheti upon the works of architecture and urbanism in each of the three periods which are its area of concern.
Abstract: The Formal Kinship of Architecture and Urbanism: Design in the Italian Renaissance/ Mannerism/ and Baroque. By William D. Faught This thesis investigates and defines the nature of the esthetic associated with historical styles in general, and examines in some detail the operation of an estheti upon the works of architecture and urbanism in each of the three periods which are its area of concern. Some historical background for each period is presented, the esthetic arising from those events is described, and specific architectural and urbanistic projects are examined which seem to be representation of the periods. The works of archi¬ tecture and urbanism will be seen to react in similar ways to changes in the Italian society.
