TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a method and means for evaluating the quality of audio and video transfer characteristics of a device upon which, or through which, audio and/or video information is contained, or passes, respectively.
Abstract: Method and means for evaluating the quality of audio and/or video transfer characteristics of a device upon which, or through which, audio and/or video information is contained, or passes, respectively. Both method and apparatus concern the evaluation of the quality of information transfer in the recording and playing back of a recording medium or in the transferring of audio and/or video information through an information handling device referred to as a throughput device. Unit evaluation is accomplished by establishing an input signal of known content, measuring selected parameters of selected parts of the input signal, feeding the input signal to the unit under test, measuring the parameters of parts of the output signal from the unit under test corresponding to the same selected parts of the input signal, and comparing the selected parameters of the input signal with the corresponding parameters of the output signal. Whether monitoring the quality of the signal transfer characteristics of a throughput device, a magnetic tape containing program material, or a video disc, master disc or replica, a "signature" is created for the unit under test, and subsequent analysis of the unit as it progresses along a production line or of a copy made on the same or alternate recording medium results in a second "signature" which is compared against the first signature to make a determination as to the quality of the signal handling or transfer characteristics of the unit. In this manner, out-of-tolerance conditions can be automatically detected, thereby eliminating subjectivity and providing consistency in the quality level of device testing.

TL;DR: In this article, a picture is magnified with an optical system within the range of magnification suitable for cost and video quality, and the magnified picture is converted into an electric video data.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To achieve a device in which the magnification can be varied continuously over a wide range, by combining an optical and an electric magnification system, in a picture processing device. CONSTITUTION:A picture is magnified with an optical system 3 within the range of magnification suitable for cost and video quality, and the magnified picture is converted into an electric video data. This picture data is magnified into a multiple or a fraction with an electric magnifier 10. Thus, the magnification can be varied continuously at a wide range, allowing to achieve excellent video quality with low cost.

TL;DR: In this paper, the logical sum between an image data to be thinned out and one or both image data before and after it and taking the result of operation as one of the image data pre and post operation is used to increase video quality.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To increase the recorded video quality, by operating the logical sum between an image data to be thinned out and one or both image data before and after it and taking the result of operation as one or both the image data before and after it. CONSTITUTION:An input line data S1 and a thinning out data sampling pulse signal S3 are given to the 1st delay F/F circuit 3 to generate a thinning out line data S5. Similarly, a thinning out line data S6 is generated at the 2nd delay F/F circuit 4. These thinning out line data S5 and S6 are logically summed at an OR gate 6 and converted into a line data S7. Thus, the line data S7 in OR processing is sequentially written in the buffer memory 7 with a memory write-in pulse S8.

TL;DR: In this paper, a video signal is sampled with an A/D converter for digital conversion and a shift register samples a synchronizing signal for serial-parallel conversion to output a digital signal.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce jitter of reproduced video signals and to prevent the deterioration of playback video quality, by switching digital data of a video signal and a synchronizing signal with an identifying signal and recording it through the addition of the identifying signal. CONSTITUTION:A video signal SVin is sampled with an A/D converter 1 for digital conversion. A shift register 2 samples a synchronizing signal Hin for serial-parallel conversion to output a digital signal. An identifying circuit 4 identifies the video signal from the synchronizing signal and both the signals are recorded on a recorder 7 through the changeover with a switching circuit 5. Data are read out from a recorder 7 with a readout circuit 8 and the production of playback sampling pulse, synchronism detection and serial-parallel conversion can be made with the data and a clock signal. The video signal is applied to a D/A converter 10 with a switching circuit 9 and the synchronizing signal is applied to a horizontal synchronizing signal playback circuit.

TL;DR: In this paper, a nonlinear amplifying circuit is proposed to compress or stretch luminance and color difference signals respectively at the front and rear stage of an A/D and D/A converters.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the deterioration of video quality when the quantized level number of memory element is reduced, by providing a nonlinear amplifying circuit which compress or stretch luminance and color difference signals respectively at the front and rear stage of an A/D and D/A converters. CONSTITUTION:A luminance signal Y processed at a luminance signal processing circuit 20 is compressed at a Y signal companding circuit 34 when the luminance is high and stretched when low. It is uniformly quantized at an A/D converter 23 and processed at a memory 25c and D/A converter 26c. The signal Y is stretched at a Y signal companding circuit 36 when the luminance is high and compressed when low, to be restored to the original amplitude. That is, the deterioration of the video quality is taken as the brightness and coarse quantization is made for higher luminance and fine quantization is made for lower luminance. The color difference signal at a color signal processing circuit 19 is made similarly at color difference signal compressing and stretching circuits 33a, 33b, 35a, 35b depending on the color saturation degree. Thus, the deterioration of video quality is improved by reducing the quantizing level and memory capacity and the cost is lowered.

TL;DR: The basis of making the above measurements, using video, are presented in a format to guide practitioners in applying video as a measuring tool.
Abstract: Video systems can be configured to measure position, size, attitude, brightness, and color of objects including objects in high speed events. The measurements may be time correlated or images from several sources (perhaps widely separated) may be correlated directly by image splitting techniques. The composition and specifications of the video system will vary considerably depending on the parameters measured and the accuracy desired. The basis of making the above measurements, using video, are presented in a format to guide practitioners in applying video as a measuring tool. Topics include relative vs. absolute measurements, scales and references, data insertion and retrieval, human factors, and video digitization.© (1982) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose to increase the playback video quality by binarization by detecting the video information of lines read-in through scanning and sampling in video element unit if it is a character row or not, comparing and discriminating it with the result of detection of the lines before and after, and outputting the line if it was between lines in white level.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To increase the playback video quality by binarization, by detecting the video information of lines read-in through scanning and sampling in video element unit if it is a character row or not, comparing and discriminating it with the result of detection of the lines before and after, and outputting the line if it is between lines in white level. CONSTITUTION:An input video signal BS of an original picture G is compared with a fixed threshold value S1 at an analog comparator 1 of a character line detection section A and converted into a binary signal, and an integrated output having the period of signal in synchronizing with the scanning of one line toward the main scanning direction x is obtained at an integration circuit 2. It is compared with a fixed threshold value S2 at a digital comparator 3 to output a signal d0 being 1 when the line is at character line a1... and being 0 when between lines b1.... Logical discrimination based on the result of detection of the present line and lines before and after is made with a character line/between lines informaion storage circuit 4 and a character line/between lines logical judging circuit 5, and the quality of playback picture can be increased by making the part between lines into white level compulsively with the reference according to the signal D.

TL;DR: In this paper, a video element information required for the processing of deterioration picking and storing the input data is inputted with a CLK, inverting bit candidates 96, 97 for processing the secondary or primary dimension deterioration appear.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To form a color facsimile with low cost and having high performance tone, by applying at least one of primary and secondary dimensions coding for every bit of the same weight of each video element information, in a video cmpression system of facsimile. CONSTITUTION:When video element information required for the processing of deterioration picking and storing the input data is inputted with a CLK, inverting bit candidates 96, 97 for processing the secondary or primary dimension deterioration appear. A data selector 95 selects and output inverting bit cadidates 96, 97 of processing primary dimensional or secondary dimensional deterioration with signal 1D/inversion 2D, original video element data 99 and an inverting bit candidate 98 are compared at a read only memory 93, and the inverting bit candidate 98 being permissible range of deterioration of video quality is outputted through inversion. Thus, remarkable compression effect is expected as to video data by combining the deterioration method and the compression coding system.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose to reduce the minimum scanning time and to prevent the deterioration in video quality due to unevenness of transmission, by making read or recording for video signals for one line's share, when paper moves to a specified location even during paper feed.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce the minimum scanning time and to prevent the deterioration in video quality due to uneveness of transmission, by making read or recording for video signals for one line's share, when paper moves to a specified location even during paper feed. CONSTITUTION:When a paper feed roller 3 starts operation, a DC generator 4 outputs a DC voltage D propotional to the number of revolutions of the roller 3 in the unit time during a step settling time. A high speed comparator 5 monitors the voltage D and compares it with a comparison reference voltage Eref of a comparison reference voltage generator 14, and when the voltage D is greater the voltage Eref, a voltage E is outputted. When a D type FF7 detects the leading of the voltage E, a signal F controlling the start of reading or recording of a one line video dignal is read and outputted to a recording control signal output terminal 6 to supply it to a read-in or recording section. When the recording section starts the operation, a signal G representing the read-in or recording of the one line video signal is transmitted to a read-in/recording control circuit as a response signal of a signal F.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To achieve a reproduced picture without extension of frame time and crosstalk, by setting a specified holding period between a readout period and an injection period, in a charge injecting device used for two dimension image pickup. CONSTITUTION:A basic operation sequence requiring each operation such as storage of charge, readout and injection is repeated every video element in the readout unit, and a specified holding period T2 is set between a readout period T1 and an injection period T3. Thus, a phenomenon of the mixture of injected charged in a well produced from video element trains R1-R4 being injected charge around other video element trains R1-R4 is prevented. Thus, the crosstalk of signal charge is avoided and the problem injuring the video quality of reproduced picture is avoided.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To minimize the deterioration of video quality due to compression, by compressing the combination of codes for 2 video elements' share of an intermediate tone signal in which one video element is represented with one tone out of a plurality of tones into a fixed length code shorter than the code length for two video elements' share. CONSTITUTION:An intermediate tone video signal read-in from an original is written in a random access memory 3 with a read-in circuit 1. The data from the random access memory 3 is transmitted to a code conversion circuit 4 and a microcomputer 5. The data in 8-bit inputted to the code conversion circuit 4 is compressed into data in 7-bit under the control of the microcomputer 5, inputted to a shift register 7, and a data in 7-bit is transmitted to a BCH processing circuit from the shift register 7 as a transmission data SD. In a code conversion circuit 4, the combination of codes for two video elements' share of intermediate tone signals in which one video element is represented with one tone out of a plurality of tones, is compressed into a fixed code length shorter than the code length for two video elements' share.
