Channel models are important tools to evaluate the performance of new concepts in mobile communications. However, there is a tradeoff between complexity and accuracy. In this paper, we extend the popular Wireless World Initiative for New Radio (WINNER) channel model with new features to make it as realistic as possible. Our approach enables more realistic evaluation results at an early stage of algorithm development. The new model supports 3-D propagation, 3-D antenna patterns, time evolving channel traces of arbitrary length, scenario transitions and variable terminal speeds. We validated the model by measurements in a coherent LTE advanced testbed in downtown Berlin, Germany. We then reproduced the same scenario in the model and compared several channel parameters (delay spread, path gain, K-factor, geometry factor and capacity). The results match very well and we can accurately predict the performance for an urban macro-cell setup with commercial high-gain antennas. At the same time, the computational complexity does not increase significantly and we can use all existing WINNER parameter tables. These artificial channels, having equivalent characteristics as measured data, enable virtual field trials long before prototypes are available.

QuaDRiGa: A 3-D Multi-Cell Channel Model With Time Evolution for Enabling Virtual Field Trials

This paper presents a 3-D statistical channel impulse response (IR) model for urban line of sight (LOS) and non-LOS channels developed from 28- and 73-GHz ultrawideband propagation measurements in New York City, useful in the design of 5G wireless systems that will operate in both the ultra-high frequency/microwave and millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum to increase channel capacities. A 3GPP-like stochastic IR channel model is developed from measured power delay profiles, angle of departure, and angle of arrival power spectra. The extracted statistics are used to implement a channel model and simulator capable of generating 3-D mmWave temporal and spatial channel parameters for arbitrary mmWave carrier frequency, signal bandwidth, and antenna beamwidth. The model presented here faithfully reproduces realistic IRs of measured urban channels, supporting air interface design of mmWave transceivers, filters, and multi-element antenna arrays.

3-D Millimeter-Wave Statistical Channel Model for 5G Wireless System Design

This paper reports on the interim beyond-3G (B3G) channel model developed by and used within the European WINNER project. The model is a comprehensive spatial channel model for 2 and 5 GHz frequency bands and supports bandwidths up to 100 MHz in three different outdoor environments. It further features time-evolution of system-level parameters for challenging advanced communication algorithms, as well as a reduced-variability tapped delay-line model for improved usability in calibration and comparison simulations.

An interim channel model for beyond-3G systems: extending the 3GPP spatial channel model (SCM)

To make transportation safer, more efficient, and less harmful to the environment, traffic telematics services are currently being intensely investigated and developed. Such services require dependable wireless vehicle-to-infrastructure and vehicle-to-vehicle communications providing robust connectivity at moderate data rates. The development of such dependable vehicular communication systems and standards requires accurate models of the propagation channel in all relevant environments and scenarios. Key characteristics of vehicular channels are shadowing by other vehicles, high Doppler shifts, and inherent nonstationarity. All have major impact on the data packet transmission reliability and latency. This paper provides an overview of the existing vehicular channel measurements in a variety of important environments, and the observed channel characteristics (such as delay spreads and Doppler spreads) therein. We briefly discuss the available vehicular channel models and their respective merits and deficiencies. Finally, we discuss the implications for wireless system design with a strong focus on IEEE 802.11p. On the road towards a dependable vehicular network, room for improvements in coverage, reliability, scalability, and delay are highlighted, calling for evolutionary improvements in the IEEE 802.11p standard. Multiple antennas at the onboard units and roadside units are recommended to exploit spatial diversity for increased diversity and reliability. Evolutionary improvements in the physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layers are required to yield dependable systems. Extensive references are provided.

Vehicular Channel Characterization and Its Implications for Wireless System Design and Performance

Empirical results characterizing the joint statistical properties of the local azimuth spread (AS), the local delay spread (DS), and the shadow (slow) fading component are presented. Measurement data from typical urban, bad urban, and suburban (SU) environments have been analyzed. It is found that a log-normal distribution accurately fits the distribution function of all the investigated parameters. The spatial autocorrelation function of both AS, DS, and shadow fading can be modeled with an exponential decay function. However, for SU environments the spatial autocorrelation function is better characterized by a composite of two exponential decaying functions. A positive cross correlation is found between the AS and the DS, while both parameters are negatively correlated with shadow fading. All essential parameters required for the implementation of a simulation model considering the joint statistical properties of the AS, DS, and shadow fading are provided.
